Click, Can I send you Missile Test 2? It's AI'd too.

Nope, I'm only using bots that were actually intended to be used in BBEANS at one point in time.  Otherwise I'd be swamped with updates and I'd never get the pack done.

And it looks like the ingame tournaments WILL be done since at least one person (GK) wants them!

Edit:

In fact now that I think of it, it would be interesting to make a "Ingame Tournament Challenge" thread where you try to win ingame tournaments against Nar AI or Starcore AI.  With non-popups.

actually was my original idea for Backlash Online

have a passcode or such shown at the Golden Sawblade screen and race to find it out and submit it

only problem is everyone will just look in the files themselves and not bother playing..

You could put the passcode in a trophy gmf... make the trophy out of unskinned (so you can't just look at the .bmp) letter shapes.  It wouldn't be foolproof as anyone with component knowledge could just make a component out of it, but it would take a bit more effort.

You guys are missing the point. This tournament is not about destroying the other guys in the most brutal way possible, its about seeing a good fight fight through and through. I have seen an annoying tendency for bots that took MANY hour and look so cool and unique, only for them to be destroyed by a wave of iron spikes. I honestly don't see how entertaining it is to see these well thought out bots loose by a fluke.

SKBT hit the head of the nail. Its not about needless destruction, its about building cool, unique robots, not mindless destruction(Kinda hypocritical form someone who normally enters bots he had on his game for months at a time.)

Make a rule that says bots must be cool and/or original and not suicidal or overly destructive?

Would be very subjective and hard for builders to know whether or not their bot will be allowed beforehand, but it could solve a lot of problems.

Also ban flamethrowers?  Since even one flamethrower against a flameless opponent would kind of be an insta-win.

Well I'm not really looking for a majority here.  I'll put in the ingame events if there's even mild interest since it's not that much work.

I know very few people do them (I don't know how long it's been since I did one), but it does make for a unique challenge and requires a totally different style of building.

The grey on the menu is put there by the game itself

I kinda blended it all in...
so I didn't have to go through all the .gib files and change all the highlights.  Sue me.)

Wow, that's some quick turnaround on that quote.

UI looks really nice, and fast too.

Wait, so Click abuses a loophole...badly?
If he doesn't win this tourney, it's his own fault.

Not exactly... there is a tactical reason I made Hide come out after 90 seconds, actually.  I figured that if the opponent isn't OOTA or heavily damaged from the blade by that time, then they're not going to be, and they could very easily win by points from beating up Seek.  So Hide's job then is to act as fresh "reinforcements" and hopefully pull ahead in points or perhaps destroy the weakened opponent.  I didn't put weapons on it just to waste weight.  ;)

Looking forward to the next fight, my money's on SKBT.  Hammers AND multibots will be double trouble for Runtime Error and I bet those hammers are strong enough to take out Techno wheels in one or two hits.

Scrap vs. GF93 was AWESOME.  Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, but especially in the first round.  If these fights were rated, that would be 5 stars right there.

Picnic Attack vs. Naryar was quite epic as well.  You seriously can not tell who wins that until the final blow is struck.

Now if only my fight could be that awesome... unfortunately I'm afraid NFX is going to tear me up good.  I've got a nice narrow front for him to hit, and no way to damage those weak 140 cm extenders.  Best I can hope for is probably a 1-2 loss.

Hmmm....

Dang!  Looks like I used up my unrealistic shell spinner already.  Gonna be tough to come up with something else for this...

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that every DSL BOTM ACAMS has done has not used the realistic rule; it's nothing new.  But remember that just because your bot doesn't have to be realistic doesn't mean it CAN'T be realistic.

@Joe - So BOTM wasn't secret? I never knew that.

originally they had a submission thread and you posted your splash (so everyone knew it was yours) instead of the anonymous uploader.

people started to base votes on members instead of robots that's why ACAMS is now strict on secrecy.

Problem is, you can often tell from the splash style who did it...

And yeah, Giant Enemy Crab was mine.

YAY

I'll be the first to revel all of the easter eggs :trollface

And about Cirque de Malheur, it is OK but Cirque du Malheur sounds better.

Edit: Wait, it's not released yet ? Damn. Oh well.

Yes, I agree that Cirque du Malheur sounds better, but Google Translator gave me "de" so I wasn't sure it was proper French.  Will change.

It will be released probably within a week or so, I just want feedback on the inclusion of in-game events and to make sure I'm not missing any bots.

If I may make a suggestion, there should be some inertia-powered axle flippers in here too, like Ludicrous Speed.  Would add some nice variety in the designs.

UPDATE:  The pack is released!  Link: http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/files/dsl_bbeans_ai.rar

It's been a long time (some might say too long) but it's nearly here!  I just have to put all the files together and possibly make some in-game events.

(Yes, I put some orange in the background UI so I didn't have to go through all the .gib files and change all the highlights and text from orange to green.  Sue me.)

Here's the breakdown of what you get in the pack:

- All 128 bots that competed in BBEANS2, 4, and 6
- 31 additional bots that were replaced, disqualified, or too late
- The Electric Arena 2 and both versions of the BBEANS Tournament Arena
- New music used in BBEANS match videos (not the same ones in the stock pack either)
- Of course, a few easter eggs (but they are WELL hidden this time... you won't be able to find them just by looking through the new files  ;) )

And a further breakdown of the teams.  Some are recycled from the stock AI pack, others are totally new:

If you don't see your bot (or any bot for that matter) on that list then post here.

Also, how many people want new BBEANS-themed in-game tournaments in the Team HQ?  I did some for the stock pack but I don't want to bother if nobody really cares about it... I can recycle all the prizes from the stock pack so making them in DSL won't take long though.  What do you guys think?

Heh, same here. I absolutely cannot be bothered to work for this.

Bother, bother, bother, bother, bother, bother.

There, now you're bothered.  ;)

My advice: don't accept any new teams or updates, just focus on getting together everything you have so far and fixing the errors that GK and 123 found.

Modifications / Re: Flipper Frenzy "Boo" fix! AKA UK CROWD MOD
« on: January 05, 2011, 08:37:22 PM »
Did you actually try this to make sure it works?

Because I'm pretty sure you can't replace .wav's with .mp3's.

It is perfectly possible to edit the crowd sound effects, but you need to use .wav's.

Alternative: rename the files in reverse order of intensity... so the dull murmuring becomes loud cheering, and the loud cheering becomes booing.  So then when the bots get damaged the crowd cries foul and starts booing.

Not bad, the red X looks out of place though.

Also, if that's for the RA2T2 arena, the clear walls will look out of place.  It would look better if you could skin them to look like wood but I doubt that would be a simple matter.

Modifications / Re: AI Parts + Previews + 140cm Extender
« on: January 05, 2011, 08:28:34 PM »
You're welcome Joe.

Although, i don't like the 140cm red extender.  The square one is okay because it's length makes it hard to use, but the red one is like using a smartzone to attach things in space. When you fix the .exe, maybe remove that.

Unless you guys like the invisible extender?

What?  The "140 cm" red extender is all but useless due to its weight.  Sure you can attach stuff out in space, but it's 35 kgs.  I'd like to see someone make an effective bot with that.

I'm all for legitimizing the 140 cm square extender though.  It's been used unofficially long enough now and no major abuses have popped up.

Modifications / Re: Merry Christmas
« on: January 05, 2011, 06:30:25 PM »
The only thing I can think of is that there is some component which all three bots use, that is not in your game.  I'm 99% certain I included all the custom components, so it must be some stock component that's not in DSL... which means it must be the control board.  Check and see if you have a controlboard.txt in your Components folder (or in Components.cfz) and a controlboard folder.

If this is the problem, you can do a bit of BFE magic to fix it.  Just do a Find and Replace for "controlboard" and replace with "ax2550".

Did anyone else have this problem?

Actually, it has 2, it's just disguised very well

I guess you are the builder then?  But then there is no way to be sure, right?  As long as you don't come out and say it directly.  ;)

Which you didn't really, but it was pretty clear.  Just saying you don't need to get yourself DQ'd over a slip of the tongue if you don't want to.

If it does have 2 batteries then Sygnosis is actually pretty good.  But really it's a tossup for me between that and 90 DOP; my vote could easily go to either one.

Off-Topic Discussion / 8 year old scientists
« on: December 29, 2010, 02:59:43 AM »
A class of 8-10 year olds published their school project in Biology Letters, a respected science journal.  Complete with graphs colored in with colored pencils.  They have remarkably good spelling and grammar, though.

http://gawker.com/5715860/eight+year+olds-publish-study-in-respected-science-journal

It sounds like a joke, but if you click on the link in that article you can get the full paper.

Here are some of my favorite quotes:

Quote
If they [the bees] could solve it [the puzzle], it would mean that they are really smart, smarter than we thought before, which would mean that humans might have some link with bees.

Quote
To get ready to do the experiments ... We then watched the David Letterman videos of ‘Stupid Dog Tricks’, in which dogs were trained to do funny things.

Probably the only scientific paper to reference David Letterman ever.  :laughing

Quote
We then put the tube with the bees in it into the school's fridge (and made bee pie :)).

Quote
(e) Training phase 2 (‘the puzzle’ … duh duh duuuuhhh)

Quote
Otherwise they [the bees] might fail the test, and it would be a disaster.

Quote
So we conclude that the bees did not solve test 1 by only going to the middle flowers of each quadrant (‘dah dahhh dahhhhhh’).

Quote
It tells us that bees can learn to solve puzzles (and if we are lucky we will be able to get them to do Sudoku in a couple of years' time).

Quote
We thank ... the George Inn—where the manuscript was written—for the free Cokes for the children (and pints for others).

I have to say for a bunch of kids though, it is a reasonably well-done experiment.  Now why can't all the kids on GTM be more like those kids?
