Yeah I know I said I wouldn't work on my robot anymore tonight. I lied (rather, I got bored :P ).
I managed to get one "ear" on it just shy of the weight limit (the samurai sword is useful, who knew?). It has made a noticeable difference. It still can't help me beat Wide Cut. I don't know how, but that stupid thing tears this robot apart.

Wether they're legitimate armor or not, those blades weren't doing a very good job of stopping HS's. Wide Cut took one of them out in a single hit. I did manage to get ramplates on, but only after using complicated extender work (something I've been trying to avoid). I also got an iron on protecting the T's.

Well I didn't really get to check off everything on the todo list. Today was a busy day so I didn't really feel like working on it that much. I did tighten the chassis considerably, and the robot has a very low center of gravity. Thus, it's very stable. It's also 25 kilos closer to the limit.
I can't seem to avoid the original setup I had with the ramplates. I simply don't have enough room at the moments to get them all on. I'll re-work the chassis a little it and that ought to get me enough room to put on those other ramplates. I've yet to test it on the AI but I'm expecting similar results to the beta. Oh and I forgot to mention before that it has stacked blacks. I wasn't about to power this thing with one black battery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As for the name, here's another hint: Two of the letters stand for a name. 1327
Off-Topic Discussion / Re: worried about the forums direction.« on: August 25, 2010, 04:53:46 PM »
As most of you know, I joined this forum back in May, and I've been here since. I'm gonna be honest, the four months I've spent on this forum have so far been more enjoyable than all of my accumulated time in other online communities. I've been here and there, and I've left numerous communities for one of two reasons; either a small feeling of dissent eventually boiled over and I left or the group dissipated and I left with everyone else. So far, I've had no real resentful thoughts towards this community or its occupants, and so I think I'm gonna be around for a while. However, let's face facts, this is a community based around a seven year old bargain bin game; this community could easily be dissolved if some bad decisions are made or something major were to happen.
Now I know we all can hate newbies. A lot of them are ignorant, emotional, preteens that don't like to listen, but we can't have our community without them. You aren't gonna find a lot of newbies who are older, listen better, and can think strait. We can't, however, try and cut down a newbie every time he doesn't make a robot according to the set standards or posts something stupid in the junkyard. They should be reprimanded accordingly, but we can't have a community without newbies. Veterans are going to leave, and what determines if the community stays alive is how well we can replace them with newer members. Now this doesn't mean we should start kissing up to new members just because we need them for our community to stay around, but we can't go and bite the hand that feeds at the same time. If we learn to deal with these newer members better, we can lift the mood of the place a little. I know I may be taking this a bit to serious, but like I said I really don't want anything bad to happen to this community. This is the first community that I've really settled down into. 1328
Off-Topic Discussion / Re: GTM land!« on: August 25, 2010, 04:30:41 PM »At least with notebooks/netbooks, most PCs also come with built in webcams and mics. Example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220700 Well yes, that's just the way notebooks and netbooks work. It's a necessary to make them compact and easy to travel with. It's also a huge pain in the butt if it breaks. Oh, and not all Apples have built in webcams. The Mac mini (which now has an easy to unscrew bottom) and Mac Pro (essentially an Apple branded tower PC) only have built in webcams if you buy an Apple branded monitor. Of course they don't. I'm just criticizing the way they generally do things. 1329
Off-Topic Discussion / Re: GTM land!« on: August 25, 2010, 04:05:21 PM »Word 2004 looks like this: When I (and everyone else) opened word, it didn't have the formatting palette on the side there by default. When I (and everyone else) opened the formatting pallet, it floated around over the white space. Even after putting it on the side like that, it's still annoying. I don't like windows floating around in limbo like that. If it suits you better for it to be organized that way, thats fine by me I suppose. When I upgrade my RAM, I just buy the regular old PC stuff from Newegg. On my MacBook, I just pop off the battery, and the compartment is there. On my PowerMac G3, there is a door on the side that has a handle. A simple pull on the handle opens up the door where I have access to literally everything. The motherboard (or "logic board", as Apple likes to call them) is on the door. The Mac mini is a little bit harder, but it can be opened without much effort. Well yes, that's ram. That's a pretty universal computer part, and it's easy as to upgrade on all computers. I don't think, however, it's as easy to upgrade the video card or something like that.As for everything being external, what the I mean when someone wants their broken internal webcam or internal mic fixed without spending the money to buy a new one, they have two options. They can either repair it, or send it in (if its under warranty). If you own a mac, and your internal webcam breaks, and you want to send it in, you can't take apart the computer, send in the webcam, and expect to get a fixed one back for nothing. You'd have to send the whole thing in. If you bought a webcam bundled with your PC and it's covered by warranty, all you need to do is detach the cam and send it in. You can keep using your computer while someone in india fixes (or in most cases, replaces), your broken hardware. Say you want to try and fix it yourself instead. Fixing a usb webcam is going to be a pain (if possible), but its going to be more of a pain fixing a webcam that you have to open up your entire computer in order to get to. 1330

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: GTM land!« on: August 25, 2010, 02:43:06 PM »If your only experience is from school, could it be because you never adjusted to the non-Windows UI? I adjusted to it fine, I just didn't like it. Macs have supported multi-button mice since at least 2001, and have had first party multi-button mice since 2005. And what more complicated functions are you referring to? I didn't know that about the mice. The one I used in school was a one button. As for the part about more complicated functions, I'm sorta gonna have to go on a little tandem to explain. One of the things I had to do on one of these computers was use a word processor (I think it was a Mac version of MS Word, ironically enough). Now, I don't know if it's changed since then (it's been some time) but the interface was pretty much blank. Well this is just fine if all you want to do is type and save crap, however the teacher wanted us to muck about with text properties and add images and do a bunch of other stuff. This was stuff I could do rather easily with the cluttered windows interface, I knew what all the little buttons did and how to use them. However, the mac interface was blank. I had to either navigate through the dropdown menus or bring up a little tool window that just floated around in limbo until you used it. It's kinda like that analogy picture comparing the mac and PC to the tricycle and motorbike. Then why have I upgraded every Mac I've ever owned? Well perhaps they can be upgraded, but I most certain the amount of customization you can have on a store bought mac isn't on par with that of store bought PCs (unless you get a Dell, lol at their nonstandard parts). Also, I like how everything is external on PCs whereas everything is internal on macs. Sure, you get the cool looking computer-all-in-one package for macs, but what if something (say a microphone or webcam) breaks? Then you either gotta open it up and fix it yourself, which is probably gonna be a pain, or send the whole thing in to apple. With a PC you just unplug the defective part, fix/replace it, and plug it back in. 1332

I don't really like them either. They're just too simple, if that's the word to describe it..
I had some at my school also. They weren't underpowered or lacking decent programs, I just didn't like the interface. The lack of a second mouse button/scroll wheel was annoying and the way they tried to simplify everything made it more difficult and annoying to do more complicated functions. Also, you can't upgrade a mac, which is a huge turn-off for me 'cus I just like opening up computers and tinkering with them. 1333

The T connector is actually pretty safe. It never really took any good hits when I tested the robot. I took advantage of the glitched collision model, so the collision is actually in towards the chassis than the visual model. The only way I could see someone really licking it is if it got hit square on by a hammer or vertical spinner, which has yet to happen.
Still, I'll see what I can do. Ok so my todo list so far: -tighten chassis -build to limit -protect/remove T connector -add more ramplates. Anything else I ought to add before I rebuild this thing? Also, nobody has tried to guess what S.P.S. stands for. 1334

Well, its been some time hasn't it?
I'm trying to pull myself out of this builder's slump with a HW popup. The version you see here is only a rough, preliminary copy of the finished product. There are some obvious problems with it (not built to the limit, chassis isn't airtight, etc.) and I will fix them for the finished version. I just figured I'd post it here before I finish it in order get some constructive feedback. I called it S.P.S. (if you can figure out what that stands for, you get an e-cookie). I tried it against a few of the Starcore AI, and it tore them apart (I killed a few of them in two hits). ![]() ![]() ![]()
