I've tried a few like that, mostly it's got AGOD issues.
The pause button on your keyboard is your friend... It's awesome and I want one.
I'll put it on the bot exchange for you. Edit: It AGOD'ed when I tried to export it, so you are going to need to press the Pause/Break button before you load the match and press it again once the match starts. It's on the bot exchange under the name "Apathy" in the DSL Heavy Weight section

I can't see hiding in the pit as a good idea... :P Rubber Sandwich Mounts + hunk of 1/8" Steel and you could totally go 3 min with a spinner like LS4... Even if you have to run with thinner armor in other places to add something like that I see it as worth it.

Yup it's totally legal, legit, and free. All you need is an email ending in ".edu" I have autocad. I use it in one of my classes at school.
It's a 3 year license too.

I'd love to do this sort of thing, but the best tools I have are a drill and a vice. 
I build with very few powertools; drill, grinder, jigsaw and a welder. (and sometimes a dremmel) You can build a competitive robot with a handsaw and a drill.
