Contests / BOTM August 2009

nope, this is a poker.

Popups = burst motors.

I think that if the pistons are past a certain angle (45 degrees perhaps), then it could be considered a popup. All a popup is is a bot that has weapons "pop" from the direction of the chassis with the intention of attacking an opposing robot's underbelly. A poker would be a robot that "pokes" at another, regardless of the opposing robot's position.

In other words, if it has non-spinning weapons that are intended to attack under bots, it's a popup.

You had the spinners correct before, so you shouldn't have turned them.

I restarted Leaf Green a couple months ago and played it basically non-stop for about a week. I got some of my Pokemons to the mid 80's levels.

Also, Katastrophe is cool.

Yup. Frilled sharks, Hammerhead sharks and Horseshoe Crabs are also cool.

^ I think that's just the angle of the picure.
EDIT: It's not. They actually are un-even :O

Any particular reason the drive is at an angle like that? Or could you just not fit it straight?

The wiki is horribly biased, and generally not a good source of info. It has decent rule-of-thumb stuff, but once you've passed that stage, it's a pretty bad resource.

I think that Redbirds are generally pretty good because they are much more powerful that RAD's, and two weigh 8 kg less than 2 regular Zteks, which is a huge amount at the LW level. For LW and some MW bots, I think Redbirds are fine.

Cool concept. I'd switch to the smaller drums and have a short wedge over the front, so the opponents ride up and get trapped on the drums. For this to work, the drums would have to spin like: -> <- (towards each other), but I'm pretty sure you of all people would figure that part out.

I really like this concept, and I think it could be done well.

At least I succeeded in entering an entertaining bot, if not a winning one.  But maybe I can still get lucky.

I hope you don't :P

If FdO can drive straight, I'm in good shape. If not, I better hope that Titanium 10 and some disk panels are enough to stop a bot that resembles a demented giraffe during mating season...

Shadow Tyrant vs Death Dealer was the best match in this tourney so far. Easily 5 stars in my opinion.

All of these fights were great.

I'm not terribly confident about my fight against CI though. My smartzone appears to be a little too far forward for my liking, but hey, that's what I get for not AI'ing my own bot (and if I did, I didn't do a very good job :P). I still think that I can win.

Anyways, PREDICTIONS!

T-800 Terminator vs Bumble Bee
Winner: Bumble Bee
- More weapons, and the ability to attack Starcore's exposed top will lead to the killer BB marching on to fight Death Dealer (whom it will also beat)GHEEEEEEY

Big Flip's Revenge vs No Hype 5
Winner: Big Flip's Revenge
- It will do exactly what it did against Bounty Hunter in the last round, and go through, where, sadly, it will probably be the end of the line for the little guys, as Absolute Chaos stands in their way.

Insult to Injury V vs Trojan Horse
Winner: Insult to Injury V
- Why the heck not?

Crawl Through Knives 4.2 vs Vela
Winner: Vela
- Oggie should get consideration for the best rookie, but he disappeared a while ago. With a previous loss to Death Dealer, the very similar Vela can make his bot disappear from the tourney too.

Winners Bracket:

R4 vs Copyright Infringement
Winner: R4
- In the combat zone, this fight would last about 6 seconds for all three rounds, but we're not there, are we? Still, I think R4 remains just too powerful to give its opponents any time to do any serious damage.

Seism 13 vs Shadow Tyrant
Winner: Seism 13
- Neither bot has faced another wedged one yet in the tourney, so I don't know just how good S13's wedges really are, or if Trov has found a way to make the E-wedges work. Just from past experience, I'm leaning towards Firebeetle's, but Trovaner is one of the best builders here. Knowing that, you can bet it won't be an easy fight...

However, when given the choice, one should listen to Ribbs over LRA2.

Modifications / Re-Stocked AI: BETA and Release
« on: July 16, 2009, 11:53:35 AM »
Well, here's what I found:

- Roly Poly crashes my game (haven't figured out why yet)
- ALARM does pretty little damage. I'd like to re-re-build this one.
- When Grog gets up on a wedge, its right snapper seems to either fire or fall forward.
- Catfish crashes the game.
- Ninja isn't invertible. I suggest rotating the drive motorsin order to make it invertible.
- Bushido sucks D:
- Devil's razors could be rotated.
- I'd put some razors on Coal Miner to increase it's damage, but it would still be fine as-is
- I believe that JACKPOT has plastic. I think it would be better if it didn't have a couple of the top-middle castors and had DSA.
- EMERGENCY's wedges suck (I know it's about preserving originality here, but they're a huge handicap against anything wedged).
- Dementia's front needs something on it (the paint I mean :P).
- Iceberg dosen't self-right, even when it's in a perfect position to. It also is a little too fast for its own good.
- Razor crashes.
- Eye Poker crashes.
- Lil Dog crashes.
- Da Dog crashes.
- REVENGE's side extenders that are holding on the spikes are vulnerable. They should probably be re-designed. (I have to say, it fights much better than I thought it would).
- Raptor's wedges are too narrow and short.
- Ripblade's wedge seems kinda useless.

That's just what I got from my first hour or so playing it. I have to say that all the rebuilds are very well done (with the exception of a couple, mainly Bushido). I really like Berserker, Civil Disobedience, BOT-204, Flapjack, Ronin and BEAR.

I'll try to diagnose the problems that I had later today or tomorrow, and post if I find anything :)

I read neither Naryar or I critisizing your AI'ing. The over-turning has lots to do with the multitude of hazards in the arena.

Also, let's just wait to see how the tourney plays out, Nary. I still have a shot at you through the losers bracket...

Remove the ice picks and mabye stack a third Black in. 8 HPZteks is one heck of a strain on only two batteries.

Also, I think larger disks = higher tip speed = better for this bot, so I don't think doing what Pwn said would be best, although you could try it on a different version.
