Bossin. Inspired by anything?
Hector LeMans New version with advice from NFX: (Image removed from quote.)
I'd say ditch the top front and bottom rear wedge pieces. As it sits, it's very prone to getting stuck on two of the 4 sides.

Defcon 5 has a nice ring to it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEFCONI don't think Defcon 5 has the right implication for a vertical spinner.

You're only thinking of one factor the hall is based off. According to the call of fame, there are four:
1) Dominating success in combat 2) Pioneering or perfecting influential designs 3) Having great fan or entertainment appeal 4) Otherwise making a lasting impact on the sport
So Explosion / Eruption would qualify for 1 and 3, and I suppose 4 to a certain extent. Obviously I don't know as much about Original Sin but 1 and possibly 4?
With regards to point 2, Explosion did "pioneer" Hardox on featherweight non-boxes, and I suppose if I was clutching at straws it perfected that particular design of flipper that's not the typical "pure wedge" shape. But I admit these are a little bit far fetched :P
I think HA was refuting HF199, not trying to knock Explosion/Eruption. On the whole "lets get one of MikeNCR's bots into the HoF", I'd prefer if there wasn't an organized forum effort to do that. If it happens, it happens and that'd be great, but I don't want it to be forced.

I've got a few projects in the works. I should also mention that with a 20-2 record for v3, and a 31-7 lifetime record, I'm officially retiring Apollyon. It's being stripped for parts for a new build and will become a static display with only the wheels and outer shell maintained.

So, Algos, Apollyon and Nyx all went undefeated at Dragon Con. Video coming soon. Pulling footage from the memory cards as I type.

Dragon Con Robot Battles is next weekend, and after some more tweaking on a few of the robots and a few new builds/rebuilds, the fleet is ready. Nyx and Apollyon have been essentially untouched since their post Motorama repairs and upgrades. Gelos (the one with the massive wheels) is a new build from almost entirely scrap parts. Algos has had its wedge freshly sharpened after going undefeated at Clash of the Bots. Klazo has a new, larger, faster drum and some new side rails and wedgelets to match. Reptar is a full rebuild of last years 1lb Dragon Con Robot Micro Battles champion.

Damn you MikeNCR! *shakes fist*
In all seriousness though, I do think yours was the better bot. Second place is plenty good for me. Hopefully I'll have some improved designs to put up against you when BB8 comes around.
Thanks for the compliment. I'll probably have the LW and HW in BB8, but the LW may not happen as I'm hoping the Hworf blade gets banned. From what I recall of the stats, it's really not well balanced.

It's not about Pythagora. And the way I see it, the weight it says in RA2 /8 is the real weight. (800kg / 8 = 100kg)
Shield's point is legitimate. Big, skinny panels don't really work IRL in either application, but it's one of those compromises that generally has to be made for things to work in the game. Unless you want to make a rule that any flat panel that is used to lift/support a large amount of weight must have additional backing extenders, then it just makes more sense to take them as assumed and move on. In the case of Pythagora, if it were actually built like that, the plate would fold near the hinge on the first good flip and it'd be done, but you'd certainly not be able to call the bot unrealistic. I've pretty much always taken "large flat panel" to really be "large flat panel with some bracing on it, not shown because RA2 can't really do that well".

Since '91, really?
Do you know who else is competing this year?
I imagine you'll see many of the bots in the videos return. I'd be surprised if Uberclocker, Scary-go-round, Overthruster, Omega Force, Tetanus Shot, Jaws, iRobob, and Blitz weren't all there.
I won't know the full list until the event starts because they don't do pre-registration, since there's no entry fee for bots (you just have to attend Dragon Con)
But were there really robot competitions since 1991?
http://robotbattles.com/history.htm Yes.

It's not dead though...
In all seriousness, it held up quite well for a first bot. I'm looking forward to seeing how the upgrades go for the next event. If you need a hand with anything, let me know.

Do you drench the shafts after you heat them as well? Or does the hot/cool cycle do a sufficient job of hardening the shaft on it's own?
Each shaft was heated to a bright orange using a torch then dropped lengthwise into the oil bath. After cleaning off the shafts I did a quick test hit on a spare piece to see how hard the shaft had gotten relative to an annealed piece of O1. The annealed piece bent 90 degrees, the hardened piece snapped off very cleanly. The second stage of the process was tempering. The three shafts and test piece were placed in an oven at somewhere between 450 and 500 degrees F and left to soak for 45 minutes. Since then, I've gotten better at the initial hardening and have to take them up to 800-900F to get the proper hardness after tempering.
