Off-Topic Discussion / Re: I needs a laptop« on: July 24, 2010, 03:27:52 PM »
I was recently looking into a new laptop and after making up my mind, I found this study. The three year study which was released in Nov. of 2009 was conducted by a computer warranty company, SquareTrade, and concluded that ASUS and Toshiba were the most reliable laptops.
If you plan to be multitasking, you want as much ram/memory as you can get. 1063
Modifications / Re: text files of stock components??« on: July 24, 2010, 02:51:33 PM »
First you have to extract all the text files from Components.cfz using a cfz program (I prefer Lut-ze's).
Since you brought that your trying to modify the car steering unit, Serge's decompilers are the only decompilers that work for it (Dummy's/Firebeetle's GMF Compiler doesn't work). 1064
General Support / Re: GMF viewing problem« on: July 23, 2010, 08:16:13 PM »
All the decompiler does is make everything more readable (after starting up the decompiler, select the compiled gmf and click 'Open'; then pick a new name for the decompiled version and click 'Save'). You still need to know what your doing in order for your changes to work (after recompiling). Take a look at the Beetlebro's tutorial (on their site) for a slightly-overwhelming, beginner's look at the GMF. Take a look at other GMF files for the more advanced stuff (such as how to make arenas).

Why? What pack do you think has the most variety? PYS AI is mostly VSers while RA2GE and RFS AI have originality but I don't think of them as having more variety (although, I can't say for certain for RA2GE because I don't remember much about it).
Starcore V3 doesn't have as much variety as Starcore V1 or V2 but I generally play in the latter so I didn't even think about it at the time... 1066

Working together on it would be fine with me (more the merrier) but I think we should wait for permission from Mad. I remember him talking about this arena when he began working on it but I have no idea how far he got...

You may need to bring your computer in to your local tech repair guy because it sounds like a pretty sever virus infection.
What sort of virus protection do you have? 1068
Modifications / Re: In need of an arena.« on: July 20, 2010, 10:19:03 PM »
If needed, I have some old coding that could be recycled for the Arena.py (I would just need to add some coding so that the AI doesn't attack the cages). The Arena.gmf wouldn't be too difficult to do (although, Joe would probably do a better job at skinning it than me).
Unfortunately, I'm also in the middle of a couple arenas but it wouldn't take too long to do this one... 1069
Stock Showcases / Re: My First Bot On Showcase« on: July 20, 2010, 09:33:37 PM »
I can already tell that I'm going to like this showcase....
The DDT wedges look a little short to be effective so I would extended them to at least the edge of your axes. The bot is also a little overpowered (1-2 black batts would be more than enough for your current setup). 1070

Ways of Improving:
-It may seem overwhelming at first but take a look at some of the showcases for ideas and tips -Practice building more efficient bots -Take a look at the Beetlebro's site (its filled with different odds and ends that you might find helpful) Downloads: -Most people here are using the official 1.3 patch for their RA2 installs (1.2 doesn't have all the benefits of 1.3) with the AI parts unlocked (separate download). -Hardest AI: BBEANS AI Pack (stock) -Most Variety in AI: Starcore V3 (stock) -Most Realistic AI: DSL (adds custom components that are balanced) (not stock) -Unfortunately, it isn't very easy to figure out which bots are good/bad in our current bot exchange but you'll be able to figure it out if you look at some of the showcases. -Custom components tend to make the game too easy but feel free to take a look at them (though, you should keep a separate install for them). 1071
Tutorials and Tips / Re: AI-ing (.py files, coding, nose-orienting R+D, and help)« on: July 20, 2010, 06:41:39 PM »Would it be possible for a medic Ai? A bot with the medic Ai would follow its tag team partner and slowly heal it but doesnt heal itself.Yes. It would require roughly three things: 1. A way of determining which bot needs to be followed by the medic. 2. A negative value in plus.damage(BotID, Amount, (0,0,0)) to heal the Ally 3. Something to stop it from constantly healing the bot (it would end up with more than 100% Health, otherwise) 1072

Even if its still a work in progress, the TF SuperTruck is pretty cool... I might be a little skewed, though, because your track and video were truly awesome.
Unfortunately, Robot Combat isn't what it used to be. Overall, it has dropped in numbers but there are still people that participate enjoy participating in it. 1073

Separating the community between multiple forums reduces its overall strength. We have had something like that in the past but all it did was form feuds that were allowed to fester between the forums. At one point, we even tried having a forum for the advanced users (to get away from the n00bs) but that lasted for an even shorter amount of time...

Stock Showcases / Re: Preytor_4's stock showcase« on: July 15, 2010, 04:20:18 PM »
Try to use some of the past advice that you have gotten for new bots. Build to the weight limit, rear protection is not necessary, and shape the chassis around the components (don't just fill a snap-to-grid chassis with components).
Is there a reason for the overly tall chassis? It seems to me that your current setup would work if it was set for 5 pixels up from the bottom of the height scroller. If you don't want to count, you could always just use the Height Ruler thing-a-ma-jig in my sig so that all you need to do is line up the center of the scroller with the 5 line. Out of curiousity, why aren't you using any air? The advantage of having pistons is so that they can apply additional force to a hit. You may run into the trinity glitch if you add air but if the pistons aren't going to fire, I would just get rid of them. Since you have the weight, I would also add some snapper2 wedges and some castor armor to the front. Offtopic: War of the Monsters is a fun multiplayer game (thats where I'm assuming you got the pic and name of "Preytor" from). 1075

Although I have python, I prefer a combination of Notepad++ and firebeetle's cheat menu. Notepad++ has better highlighting colors IMO and the ability to have multiple tabs make it irreplaceable (actually, regit might be an alternative worth looking into...). Most problems in the python, I can find by doing a quick "print" in the FPS window (before the game closes).

I, generally, like to simplify my decompiled files but lines with more than one value are easier to edit when they are lined up with each other. I don't think it is necessary to add any coding for simplifying values as long that the compiled version is still the same (which makes sense now that I think about it). @Wham: Glad to hear that your not giving up. I only did a quick search for problems so I stopped as soon as I saw the issue with the lights... 1077

Smartzone3.txt is the largest stock smartzone and is inside the styles folder of Components.cfz.
Is the bot file corrupt? If you move the file around a bunch, this has been known to happen. All you would have to do to fix it would be to redownload the .bot file. If this doesn't fix your problem, I'll take a look at the bot when I have time later today... 1078

Instead of doing something that could be considered illegal, you could use the pause key every 25 seconds, turn off the recording, turn on the recording, and then resume the battle (then just merge the files like you have been).

Modifications / Re: Whams Arena Thread« on: July 13, 2010, 12:16:43 PM »Yes. In programming 0=False and everything else equals True (but for simplicity, it is recommended that you use the value 1 for True).setting *UNYIELDING to True would also work...That would be setting the vaue to '1' wouldnt it? The current problem has to do with your light objects. You set *LIGHT_COLOR to 0.000000 but it needs to be a hex number. If your trying to make it white light, just set it to 0xFFFFFF. BTW, please don't add unnecessary zeros. In your new GMF, there were many values that could have been simplified (such as using "1" instead of "1.000000"). The extra zeros just end up making the file bigger than it needs to be. 1080

Well thats new one... I'm sorry to say that I have no idea how to fix your problem. Have you tried reinstalling RA2?
There are alternatives, however, if your willing to use them. Using the Print Screen button or running a program that supports taking screenshots (such as Fraps) are the first things that come to mind. |
