What if you try to record via the Windows Sound Recorder / Audacity?

« on: August 09, 2010, 09:51:49 AM »
hey guys, with all the new tournaments running I decided that my Robo Zone tournament needs the finals arena to stand out.

500th post so I'm requesting something :P

I have posted the idea before and Mad was going to make it for me but he was busy with tournaments etc. I have stared at the BBEANS arena for hours and still can't figure out if i could somehow mod the combat zone arena to have 2 caged of areas that lower after a certain amount of time or if i would have to do something else also  :ouch:

here's the basic idea of what i need:

(Image removed from quote.)

- Combat zone sized arena.
- Caged off areas big enough for the bots inside to not be immobilized.
- Able to View the bots in the cages.
- The cage holding bot number 3 comes down after 30 seconds.
- The cage holding bot number 4 comes down after 1 minute.
- No hazards (except the cages which function like a hazard).
- Robots only go for robots if they are outside the cages.

this would not only make a great tournament arena but would be fun for everyone in exhibition. If anyone watches WWE then you know the basic idea of what I'm after already :)

Give me two weeks, I'll do it.

While we're on this subject of engines, I might as well provide you with one that caught my attention.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Molecular_Matter

What do the pros think?

It's awesome, but probably very expensive.

EDIT: Apparently they're releasing a free API soon. w00t!

Wait....So what you are all saying that there's no other source code or phisics engine, that at least mimics RA2?
Well, of course you can use a rigid body physics engine, but that'll just be RA2.5.

Damn...Well might as well ask atari if  they won't sell and start some sort of donation...Methinks that enough cash will convince atari to sell the rights to the engine.....(Kinda kidding myself here)
We tried to get the source code from them. Impossible, since it uses Havok, which has an expensive license.

But that still seems a bit imposible, I know it would have to be something that runs on older machines as well, but aren't there any physics engines that enable dents and stuff like that? I mean come on Worms 4 has destructible terrain and that's 3D :|
AFAIK there aren't any that aren't proprietary. Also, Worms 4 doesn't have a "real" physics engine, just terrain destruction (no complex collision detection).

It's kinda time for a new robot destruction game, and i don't mean arcade fighting.....
It is, but writing a 3d game is a lot of work. I am still working on a graphics engine, however right now I'm on holiday and don't have access to my development box.

and i thought i was trying to make it not tooooo expensive -_-'

but then why the lower resolution?

Resolution is usually determined by your monitor....if you check, the max res of both of those cards is way better than either of you listed.

Precisely. It's all my screen can support. I'm a poor and irish jew pollack.
poor, with a videocard like that!?

1920x1080 is a most common res, but if higher is possible, then why don't they make screens that support it? or maybe there are screens that support higher, but are over-expensive. i just have a simple 22 inch HD screen.

Well, I've been saving up for it for quite a long time. And I've been stuck with an El Cheapo 8500GT in the meantime.

I 'unno, I bought that screen a long time ago, when 1080p screens were apparently still rare. But yeah, I think I'll have to buy myself a new screen.

I've had much less trouble with W7 than XP. I don't know what you guys are smoking.

Also, DX11.
My opinion too. Some things are still alittle hidden but i will find them when i do need them.

I needed to upgrade because of Just Cause 2.

Ah, Just Cause 2. What an epic game.

Especially on max settings @1680x1050. I love my graphics card sometimes.
an epic game indeed. i have better max settings @ 1920x1080 =P

this makes me wonder, what graphics card do you have? i use a Sapphire Radeon HD5870 VAPOR-X 1GB. great card, but a b*tch to insert in the PC because of its size.

Sapphire HD5850 Vapor-X 2GB. I'm not that rich to afford anything more expensive than this.

I found two interesting things yesterday that I forgot to talk about.
  • A function (that seems to be never used) that takes an in-game GMF object and decompiles it to a txt gmf file. The ultimate GMF decompiler?
  • What looks like support for soft body physics.

PSP. Buy a huge memory stick, hack the psp, load pirated games from stick. Play PSOne, NES, SNES, N64, Mega Drive and Genesis games.

I'll invite you to a game sometimes. You'll see where the fun's at.

(also, for me CS:S is much more point-and-shoot and twitch-aiming-required)

Pyros: With the backburner, the pyro now has more of an excuse to be a rushing idiot.
It got nerfed recently. Isn't that bad, and makes you learn to watch your back. Plus a good pyro with the flamethrower is MUCH more dangerous.
Demoman: No longer a defense class.  The sword and shield the demo got recently turn the class into another mindless rushing class.
Only noobs go chargelander. Plus you can get them down really easy.
Scout: Hurr look at me I got magic invincible soda!
I think it's quite fun. What's wrong with it? If they get behind your defense lines, then you just don't know how to teamplay.
Engineer: Nice update.  It really helps with all the soldier/heavy ubercharges that keep destroying my crap.
The update is probably awesome, I've yet had a chance to play it though.
Sniper: Doesn't snipe anymore.  Instead, a sniper now creeps around a corner and waits for someone to shoot an arrow at.  If it doesn't kill them he runs away.  When confronted with a close range threat, a sniper now uses a jar of urine to defend himself.  If he misses, he just wussies out and runs.
Well, I prefer a sniper to be close to me so I can beat their ass when they try to frag me. If you can aim, youc an take them out when they're running away. That, and a sniper+jarate isn't dangerous. jarate+enemy team is dangerous.
Heavy: The only times I see the killing gloves of boxing used is when some heavy is trying to show off his melee skills.  The alt chaingun is useless.  The sandwich I'm actually ok with.
The KGB are pretty fun. Natascha is also very, very useful when you're skilled. and the Sandvich is lovely, not only for the heavy but for the whole team (right-click to drop it)
Spy: It's an underpowered class, and none of the updates have helped enough to fix this.  The fact that he collides with everyone on the opposite team makes an already easy job of rooting him out even easier.
It's neither over-nor-under-powered. It's essential to the team, it's well balanced, I see no problem with it.
Soldier: I never really liked the soldier, just 'cus I hate rocket spamming in any shooter with a passion.  The most anoying update for the soldier gave him that stupid pickax.  There's nothing more annoying than being killed in one hit by a dying soldier with 20hp running at 80mph.
There's no rocket spamming at just 4 rockets and a super slow reload time. The Demoman spams much, much more. Also, you just have to learn to not get abushed by Equalizer soldiers, same goes with pyros.
Medic: The only class I don't really have a problem with.  Ubers can get annoying after a while though.
Medics are awesome. Not only they're essential to he team, but healing is really fun in this game. That, and MOFUKKEN KRITZ. Fun fun fun!

General footnote: play on better servers. nomnomnom is pretty fun, so is 2fort2furious. Awesome people and cooperation make this game EXCELLENT. This isn't CS:S, you HAVE to have a good team. I also suggest tf2lobby if you want to go mild competitive.

I haven't yet got around creating support for GIFs and PNGs. PNGs should be easy, but animated GIFs might be tricky... I'll take a look.
