Discussion / Why are DSL Flails Cheap?
« on: November 07, 2009, 01:44:52 AM »
I don't really think they are that cheap.

First, I recently seem to be noticing a rock-paper-scissors effect occurring between different types of weapons:

Static, high-DP weapons (like razors) beat high-DP weapons on flails, this picture being an example (although I don't find it very convincing because I think Genocide is a SHW)

High-DP weapons on flails beat static, high-concussion weapons (like sledgehammers), as shown in this picture

and static, high-concussion weapons, in return, beat static, high-DP weapons.

So, to me, there doesn't seem to be that much of a significant imbalance as long as the type of bot utilizing those types of weapons is well-built, but that's just my crazy theory that I don't really know how to explain :P.

Second, axle mounts are weak, so certain designs, like my HW, Broadsword, which I built in response to Steel Meatball, and, of course, Blade Barrier, can rip them off easily.  Remember that not one bot type can beat all other bot types, in other words:

Now, repeat after me:

"THERE IS NO PERFECT ROBOT DESIGN."

Say it again.

Third, as for the axle glitching out, if you think about it, the axle wouldn't fly out IRL if it were adequately secured to the socket.  The reason it is not that way in the game is because of RA2's broken physics (obviously).

And finally, axle mounts are capable of causing massive havok explosions because of the moving axle, so bots with flails have a distinct disadvantage, especially in arenas with low walls, like the BBEANS arena.

I can agree on the long loading time for bots with flailed weapons.  It drives me crazy, same with trying to load 36-HS, but that's stock.

I'll enter, except that I have very few LWs and most of them have been showcased.  I'll see what I can submit.

Great, a true popup, probably the only bot type I dislike.  I should have done some more 1-on-1 testing in that arena before I submitted my entry, then I would know if my wedges were ≥ decent enough for the tournament.  Too bad I found that my wedges were only decent in that arena, oh well.  I'm also surprised how close that match was!
Good match!

Haven't really tested it against VS; all I know is that it can't beat Pyrotechnic Display.

Not surprised that no one has any comments.

Not much to say here, just implemented Nary's R.I.P. entry's design into a HW (I'm sorry):

  • NPCFs
  • 3 ants
  • 5mm titanium
  • 26 large beater bars, 30 razors, 2 light DS teeth.

Would have used a 30x80 DSL bar for the top armor, but it was intersecting the MEs holding the top 2 weapon racks.

While I'm at it, I might as well post some battleshots.............. in the form of a very messy splash:

Urjak, the snow leopard wants his revenge

I find it hard to believe that Nary considers me one of the top 10 DSL builders: most of my bots are generic :P

And yes JB is under-appreciated.

If what you're saying is that those parts are available in the bot lab instead of hidden, like they should be, then I'm guessing then that you didn't install the DSL mod correctly.  I can't think of another reason why the cheatbot2 parts aren't hidden in your bot lab, other then that you made them so.

If that is not so, then try to stop using cheat parts altogether, you wouldn't gain a lot of respect by doing so (please spare him Nary).

Edit: Dammit JB you beat me :(

I like to build a variety of bots as well, but overall, I mostly build SnS.

4.  Doomkiller, I can't really tell from the screen but my guess is that it's a metal hinge wedge, so it should beat Ounce's skirt hinge.

ahem

It's November 1st, the day I first started playing RA2, so I thought I'd dig up something to show you, I was very lucky to have found it:

This is Thunderbird, the very first bot I made in RA2.  It was actually an attempt to replicate something I made with legos a looooooooooooooong time ago.

And this is the new version of VR.  When I first made this bot, I tried not to make it look too much like Heaven's Sawmill, for this version, I failed completely.  798.9 kgs.

This version managed to fix the problems I mentioned earlier, but now I have another problem: the wedges suck a**!  I honestly don't know how they're so bad, let alone how to fix them.  *cries*

I'm against a wedged poker and a small VS, two bots that could easily tear off my wedges.  Not really what I wanted, but the wedges did well during testing, so I could do well in the first round.

Tournament Archives / RAW 2 Predictions

Thank god there's someone here that tries not to be harsh when posting thoughts before a tournament *cough*Naryar*cough*.

Anyway, my 1st round predictions:

090901- While GK3's bots have a high quantity of weapons, they probably don't have the speed to knock away BoneShaker fast enough, and the extenders are rather exposed.

JD- The chassis and weapons of HD7's bots are too exposed to withstand the onslaught of the two VSs.

Clickbeetle- Trial and Error were built to combat HS and popups, respectively, and the opposing team is one of each.

Reier and Naryar- GB and Nate's bots have the disadvantage of having exposed fronts and single wedges, perfect prey for IS5 and G-4CE 2 [P].

40757- Double wedges vs single wedges pretty much sums it up, but you'll never know...

Sage- Neither of S.T.C.'s bots look like they resist gut-ripping very well, and GReeeeN doesn't have a wedge, but it has the better weapons.

Ribbs- While VS don't tend to do that well against popups, Vertice looks to be at a disadvantage because of the single wedge and a short reach, but I'm not really that sure about this one.

Wham- Unless Smoke is wedgier, neither of them look like they will last long against the 2 popups.

Duck- The HS looks like it might perform better, but I don't know about the other one.

R0B0- Synergy can easily rip off those exposed wheels, and BW looks like it has the better wedge, but a non-invertible SnS = >:O

SD- A HS killer vs a HS (although with caster armor) and a flail SnS against a dangerously exposed popup, but RQ's HS could do well against either of them thanks to the weapon placement.

K343- Unless the arena has high walls, there is no way our bots would last long. Our bots are way too unstable to fight against pairs w/ HPZ drive.  The exposed fronts could give us a chance, though.

Mad and Pys- Pyscolone's popup looks like it will perform well against the two.

Inf- Fury might have a chance against Ohs, but Exs looks to be the better of the HS.

DK and Roboman- SB is outweaponed here, but the SnSs might have a long enough reach to knock off those exposed weapon motors.
