JWitz (a very popular Pokemon-based Youtube channel) mentioned it in a video. I assume a good number of the followers came from there.

Twitch TV plays Pokemon, ie the funniest thing ever. Basically, the chat plays this rom of Pokemon Red by typing in a command (up down left right a b start or select) and the character does it. Of course, with over 50k viewers and a 20-second delay, it's, uncoordinated to say the least - lots of the player character going round in circles. As of writing, they've accumulated about 100 hours' worth of gameplay and are currently in the fourth gym. Amazingly though, they've managed to acquire the Farfetch'd from the NPC trade, and teach him cut. Current team: Farfetch'd Level 17 Drowzee, Level 17 Charmeleon, level 34, nicknamed ABBBBBBBK O. Ember has been overwritten, so it has no fire move. Pidgeot, level 40 (!) Ratatta, Level 12, I don't know its name, nicknamed JLVWNOOOOOO And keep in mind that Erika's Pokemon are roundabout Level 30. Here's the stream if you want to give them a hand.

New Axe-C-Dent. This one looks like a clunky spinning mechanism glued onto a chassis, rather than a cohesive battle unit, so it's a more accurate rendition.
