My robot apparently crashes the game. Might be the smart zones? I used the Madiaba smart zones because I didn't find any other smartzones in the stock game. Witch smartzones should I use?

Did you use one of the beam smartzones?  The original release of Madiaba's smartzones didn't include the beam zones so if there's any mysterious crashing, it's usually because the host doesn't have those and hasn't updated.

Borrowing a professional's bot and actually going through all the repairs and upkeep with them is probably the best way to learn to build your own... that's great that you were able to get that experience.

Are wedges one of your tons of new ideas for your design?  It looks like it could use at least some forward prongs so it doesn't flip itself when it hits something.

I was thinking about updating Thunderclap for that tournament.  In the interest of not turning it into Axe-ample Episode II: The Clone Wars, I think I'll go with plan B.  (I do actually have a plan B, so don't feel bad about entering that bot.)

Love that design.  The new 2.2 parts make it so much easier to make the turret look nice.  I used LaserGuidedTH for Thunderclap and Thunderhead.

Spinner armor is the best armor.

How is it against 36HS?  If the spinners tend to break, flipping the tribars upside down and lowering the angle motors might make it more resilient.

Ah I see, that makes sense.

As a scientist, I actually prefer day/month/year, I just didn't expect to see it here.

Got some ideas for an axe bot; might build something for this.

THE INITIAL DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS 00:00am GMT on 01/03/16

I'm sure you didn't mean January 3, it being a month and a half in the past.  Just to be clear, is it actually March?  Or April?

I put Kaleidor on the bot exchange.  And here is its AI:

Code: [Select]
    list.append(("Kaleidor","BiDirRam",{'ThresholdSpeed':0.02,'BackUpTime':4,'SightRange':1.5,'range':99,'radius':1,'topspeed':100,'throttle':100,'turn':100,'turnspeed':3,'weapons':(17,21,22,27,28,29),'sweapons':(12,20,23,26,30,31)}))

You will need BiDirRam.py, which is in my AI essentials pack so chances are good you already have it.  Nothing else special.

DSL tourney arena first to 2 wins sounds good to me.

  • HW (up to 400kg)
There's a typo somewhere here.  Is it HW, or is it up to 400kg?
ironforge self imposed weight limits are halved

Really?  Man, I've been out of it.  I need to relearn Ironforge.

Hey I just had a thought.  Click, RedAce, y'all up for a BotM rumble match?  Just to see what happens?
Why not, as long as Click is up for that, then I don't see a reason not to.

Sure, if you want to make a thread in the challenge board I'll AI Kaleidor and send it over.  I reckon I can use Thwartoise's AI.

Whoa, Porcupine is awesome.  It reminds me of the Sandslash bot I made for Craaig's Pokemon tournament, except not a Pokemon.  Needs more spikes on front and less on top to make it good though.

I dunno about those front skirts, it looks like they'd just get in the way so you couldn't hit anything with the hammer.  Perhaps they should be farther apart so bots can fit in between, or replaced with a wedge(s) that can get under things.

Otherwise looks pretty cool, especially how you worked RA2's swing arc limitations into the design.

Here's my bot for RedAce's Throwback tournament.  Inspired by Hedgehog and Interventionism.  It's called Nuclear Arms Race because it's ultimately self-destructive and there are no winners in the end.  (Also, it has nuclear-powered arms racing around in a circle.)

It's actually not bad in enclosed arenas.  The problem is that RedAce's tournament is in the BBEANS arena and NAR is more than powerful enough to throw bots OOTA, itself in particular.  I fully expect to fly OOTA in the first minute.  BUT I'LL HAVE FUN DOING IT.

Click entering BOTM was pretty unexpected.

I had to support my own mod, didn't I?  If I wasn't in this there'd be only 2 bots!

Also since it's pretty much done now, I have more time for actual bot building.

Probably should have gone for a simpler splash here with a plain white background or something instead of trying to make it look like a kaleidoscope.  Oh well.

If you haven't tried it yet, the Captain's Edition mod adds a ton of content.

I may try some mods at some point but I'm still unlocking the stock ships and getting achievements.  (Just got On a Wing and a Prayer.)

Also just got my first victory (Normal) without using cloaking.  The Kestrel B is pretty good!

The pit now emits a plume of smoke when a bot falls in.
The arena from the mod currently releases some smoke when a bot goes in the pit.  It also happens when a bot goes out of the Arena.

Huh, so it does.  That must be new.  Lu-tze's original arena didn't do that.

Well, the new studio arena will continue to release smoke.

Anybody have a list of everything Robot Wars has used in the drop zone?
Off the top of my head, there was a grand piano, A television, a buoy, a stove, some scrap metal, a couple car wheels, and some various sports balls (like bowling balls, and some golf balls here and there).

Edit: Oh yeah, they also dropped the robot Golem in the German Wars.

Thanks, that should do for some nice variety.  I'm not going to make a grand piano model, but some of those others are doable.  The sports balls will be amusing.

What if I can't exactly remember what I built from my very first time?  Can I just make some generic n00b bot as opposed to my first one?

It doesn't have to be your very first bot, just one of your early ones.

I've got plenty of those lying around; might submit something.  Unfortunately I might be at a 50 kg disadvantage because I knew what a weight class was right from the start and made sure to stay under the limit...

Unfortunately I need to announce the expansion will be delayed a week

Oh good.  For some reason I had it in my head that the release date was the 26th, not the 22nd, and just today I realized that the 26th is a Tuesday and the 22nd would make more sense for a release, and I didn't have the studio arena hazards done...

The extra week should allow me not only to finish the studio arena hazards, but add collision lines and stuff to the other arenas as well.

I hope I'm allowed to post teasers here.  The flipper in the new studio arena is done and I just finished the pit release, and I must say I'm pleased with the results.  The pit now emits a plume of smoke when a bot falls in.

And I have it in mind for the arena to import a random object at the beginning of every match for the drop zone -- either a fridge, a washing machine, or whatever else they've dropped on the show.  You won't know what it is until it falls on you.  Anybody have a list of everything Robot Wars has used in the drop zone?

*click* *scroll* Oh wait, there it is...

BBBBBUMP

My EVIL, EVIL brother Firebeetle started telling me about this game and that it was on sale for $4 and now I'm officially hooked.

(This was just before Christmas so it has nothing to do with why DSL 2.2 was delayed.)

After several failed attempts, I have my first Normal victory.  The hard part was actually getting out of sector 1... once I got going, I could stay going.

I had terrible weaponry (only 4 power), but 4 Mantis with max combat skills and a boarding drone.

Does anyone else still play this game?

Click, I know of at least 1 GTM member entering BB2016, not sure if it's my place to talk about it though :P

Well OK, I guess Ray Billings is technically a member.  I was thinking of active members though.

It'd be so cool to see some gtm members on the show! Of course, there's no way of identifying you, unless you hold up a massive sign saying "GameTechMods FTW" or something.

You could put a GTM sticker on the robot.
