I do try to build some realistic (well, DSL realistic) stock bots when I build stock. I don't personally like UBER STACKED HS. They just are ugly and make no sense.

So consider arenas with different criteria.

Like an arena with poles staggered (would inhibit but not prevent HS designs)

Or an arena with pits (would inhibit bots that could not drive well enough to avoid hazards) even if they were just shallow pits.

Or no side walls (would give more value to well designed rammer/pushers).

Or different type of arena at each round of the match (so bots needed to be well rounded capable not one-sided designs).

Perfect realism in such an unrealistic game is something that is near impossible. Even back in the day when "everybody built realistic" as you are saying, there were folks like ACAMS and Starcore that were building bots far more advanced and not so realistic. The game changed then, and I sincerely doubt it is ever going back.

RA2 is the best robot-combat simulation game in existence. However, it was developed a very long time ago and the result was a game that still did not quite match up to real building. That's what DSL was made for, a step in that direction. Building effective realistic bots in stock is nay-impossible.

And it was Starcore and ACAMS that lead the designs and concepts of DSL.

Even in real life robot combat, as year by year went by new parts and technologies came available.

ACAMS and I both tried to support and promote the concept of year by year carefully tested and reviewed parts added to the Stock portfolio but that was shut down quite harshly by flames and complaints when ACAMS made available the simpliest of improvements that fixed some missing symmetry and a simple attach point variation.

Consider the types of bots made in the earliest years of Battlebots and Robot Wars compared to what is built today. New efficiences, armors, weapons, battery and power systems. Double stacking an RA2 battery to represent a Li-ION battery (for example) doesn't seem that far fetched at that point does it?

Tentacle Attack is a weaponed flipper and should stay like that, NOT a popup.

While most of them are top builder's material for sure, I was already disappointed at the lack of robot type variation in Restocked AI. We don't need Starcore AI to be even less varied.

I concur that Tentacle Attack was conceived as a Weaponed Flipper and given a choice would be best if rebuilt as a modern Weaponed Flipper. A much more challenging task to be effective than building it as another Popup. Many did not understand one of the goals of the Starcore packs was showing a wide range of building styles and types. I fully support that by today's standards the Tentacle Attack of 2004 is behind today's building curve and would value updates that maximize current building understandings while keeping to the range of building types.

whoa whoa whoa dont think for a second im insulting you or your hardwork starcore, I think the starcore AI packs are indeed a tremendous creation and really improve the challenge in the some what easy game.

I was merely saying that one particular robot in the v1 of starcore (alien queen) didnt live up to the hype I was expecting as I have read past messages that suggest its incredible.

im sorry it came off this way and I hope you wont think ill of me :frown:

I look forward to playing the starcore v2, v3 and v4 packs in the future.

Your comments again seem to indicate you did not know which Alien Queen people were talking about. No one has talked much about the Starcore V1 Alien Queen since probably 2004.

Maybe the Alien Queen they mentioned was in majority this one...

Which is the Starcore V4 Alien Queen.

A bit more deadly then the one you encountered in V1?

Ha :P

Yeah I can beat a lot of the starcore v1 bots just because they're exposed somewhere and have all the weaponry at the front so just drfit round, de-wheel and hit from behind as they spin around helplessly, also I dont understand what all the fuss was with alien queen in starcore v1... Kinda sucks IMO  :frown:

Maybe you should try something a bit more advanced. Most of the bots in Starcore V1 were made in 2003 and based on what was known in 2003.

At least you listed what version you were trying against. That is a start. You are welcome to move up to Starcore V3 (made mid-2004).

And if your designs that have had the benefit of documentation of glitches and techniques acquired and documented over the last 6 years stand up to the Starcore V3 bots (and yes any human pilot should be able to out drive the RA2 AI system with practice) then maybe you could try your had at Starcore V4 Alpha (updates as of 2+ years ago to include DSA armor, button vs switch for AI HS and VS spinning, tighter AI coding and many improved designs), including the new much more stable Alien Queen.

Know what you are talking about before saying something sucks. How was your building skills in 2003?

That's the 6-year-old fury :P

(Starcore feel free to edit my post if I am wrong :P)

Yes that was the 6-year old version of Fury.

Nice to see people still considering Starcore V3 worthy of fighting, win or lose.

Glad to have people try vs the 2010 version of Fury... a bit stronger in my opinion.  ;)

2. Why does the motto for the Borg team in Starcore say "Resistance IF futile" instead of "Resistance IS futile"?

That would be a typo that in 6+ years I am not aware of anyone ever mentioning.

As a suggestion for recording the matches. I would say the scene changes are disconcerting and confusing especially when someone is about to die. Better to if possible keep the camera going and no cuts. Avoids feeling of things spliced together. Also good to recap who won at the end or let the game show which team won in the summary screen. Cutting so tight makes it hard to figure which team was the victor.

Just some suggestions,

I had originally offered to do a tag team with ACAMS. If there is not a team slot available for the 2 of us, I am happy to help get this tourny going by having Fury join into an existing team including with Stagfish as appropriate.

As ACAMS knows Fury is very good at tearing thru its teammate to get to its foes. Is part of why ACAMs had tried things like bouncing into the sky to reduce amount of time in Fury's range.

Yes I have other bots, and yes I love sending Tempus Fugit, Fury and variations of Maelstrom/Spin Doctor/Terminator T-800 and someday Warmachine into the mix.

Fury is fresh off of Wild Robots Live 2 and ready to team up with someone if they will have him as a tagteam partner.

Fury might actually have a chance to win this tourny. Would be my first win of a tourny in my long history with RA2.

Pop-ups are the bane/opposites of HS so makes me happy that odds are reduced Fury will have to fight one. (I know one could rise up from the Losers bracket).

I do feel Fury can take out Lava Rocket

And F4 is a very good Sit and Spinner but I did design Fury to be stronger against Clockwise attacks. With front snowplow shifted to the right and the stronger set of tripple maces on the "Right Arm". I thought of male fiddler crabs when I optimized Fury.

Let loose the dogs of war!

Hehehehe

That visible extender's just free weight. The setup's on the other AP of the snapper. I had 2.something kgs left, so I threw in an extender for annoying other bots. :P

I do that on my bots, adding extra extenders when finishing up a bot when I have bit of extra weight available. An extra extender in the right spot is extra armor.

I also do things like consider Rule of 7 and break up any long extenders into multiple segments (each segment having its own Hit Points). If an opponents weapon hits different segments on different hits then you have effectively increased the strength of the overall extender.

'topspeed':140,'throttle':140,'turn':140,'turnspeed':9.9,

Hax :P

:O you're right!  Starcore of all people should know that throttle and turn over 100 is beyond human capabilities, and could be considered cheating...

throttle of 130 is excusable though as for some reason that's kind of the standard for AI'ing (though I make sure now to set it to 100 for all the bots I AI).

But really I don't think that will improve Fury's performance all that much.  Most if its goodness is in the construction.

Clickbeetle you should know that 100 is max and anything past that is for show, sigh. The 140s have nothing to do with the tuning for better performance. Go look again...

We are trying to not give away the results for anyone that has not seen the video but does look like you credited the wrong bot for the win of the 2nd match of the semi finals.
