Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Design concept and internal check« on: September 02, 2015, 01:48:40 AM »For reference, you want about 500rpm to 1000rpm motor output speed, but don't forget that wheel size is also important(A pair of two inch wheels would be fine for some motors, bog down for others, and be too small for some) Depends on what the drum is like, if you have two teeth then about 8000 would be fine, if you have one tooth then around 10000 is fine. Also, you might want to have a little extra rpms in reserve to combat other drums(Faster one wins) Other good ant drums to look at would be The Bomb, Klazo, Poco Tambor, Gyroscopic, Algos, and Emsee Pee Pants. Other bots worth looking at would be Bit Vicious and Dark Pounder. 107

Some thoughts:
The whole design is way to narrow. With the high speed gear motors, turning will be near impossible with the drum on. The motors are geared way too low, any wheels bigger than three quarters of an inch will bog the motors and fry them. Consider this gear motor instead. Faster does not equal better. Unless you're going drum to drum, excess speed is actually a detriment, as the drum will struggle against even flat sides. The motor you've listed is already spinning at over 12000 RPM, unless you have a single toothed blade, it will struggle to gain any bite against an opponent. Consider a lower Kv motor, or gear down the motor somehow. You should consider a Car ESC, which will allow your motor to reverse. Can be a life saver for an invertable drum. Also consider this radio, its much cheaper and has been shown to fail safe too(You will need a programming cable, however). Your parts list looks suspiciously like Sgt. Cuddles. While its fine to use some parts with some consideration, you need to understand why he used those parts. Also, I need to point out that Sgt. Cuddles performed very poorly at Robogames. You really, really, should not make your first bot a drum. Drum bots are not easy to design or construct. The first bot is already a hand full and adding a weapon makes the whole thing worse, really think about starting with a static wedge(The Fingertech Viper or the Rovparts Ant1 are very simple and comparable in price), then once you understand how it all works, you can add to it with more vicious weapons. It's really worth starting with a simple bot, just getting the thing to start up is in self an adventure. 108

It has a long start up time, but has an insane amount of knock back, the range is much bigger than it looks, and the newest buff made it a shield breaker. It takes a little practice, but once you know when to use it, its easily Ganon's best move. What is a volcano kick?Wizard's Foot / Ganondorf's down-b. 111

Why do you have a receiver battery? Unless your ESCs don't have a BEC and you don't have a RadioShack nearby, you don't need it.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Battery power question« on: August 17, 2015, 05:28:34 PM »I meant the drive chain for the drum motor that we found at a store, not the drive motor. My apology for not clarifying. Thanks for linking those 2 links, but they are a bit out of the price range. We can come up with something.Ah, that makes a little more sense. The preferred way to getting weapon reduction is the use of timing belts/pulleys. These will help reduce unneeded weapon speed, isolate impacts away from the weapon motor, and reduce spin up time. You really should consider getting the drum professionally made, anything wrong will cause your bot to shake around like a washing machine with a brick inside of it. You might want to consider an egg-beater weapon(Like on Gyroscopic or Weta), it would be much cheaper to make, easier to balance, and is almost as good as a drum. 118
Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Battery power question« on: August 17, 2015, 12:59:49 AM »We are thinking about ordering Saifu's chassis and fabricate the drum. The Turnigy motor certainly beat out the motor we came across at a hobby store. The thing is a bit too big and my dad suggested building a drive chain (which is a dumb idea since I don't have the tools) so we'll keep that as a back up just in case if we can't find another motor. You don't need a drive chain, the gear box is already doing the work. If you are going to fabricate a custom drum, but don't have the ability to machine it, draw up the sketches in a CAD program such as E-Machine Shop and have a a big shop such as Big Blue Saw or Team Whyachi Bot Shop make it for you. More expensive, but they're likely to have superior equipment than what you have at home. Also, if you're going for the Saifu chassis, remember that it was designed for an all in one drum with motor built into it, so you will either have to make your own all in one drum, or you will have to modify the chassis to accept a stand alone motor. 119

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Battery power question« on: August 16, 2015, 11:23:47 PM »We are still deciding on the drive motors. We know geared motors are best for it, so we're scanning through robotmarketplace.com. We need 2 geared motors and 1 non-geared for drum spinner. We have a tight budget for this and it is something we want to do for fun, and possibly competitive if there are enough events.A good place to start is to look at the top ant drums right now: The Bomb, Saifu, and Klazo. All of them have an inbuilt brushless out-runner outrunner motor incorporated into the drum, Saifu and Klazo use a form of the Turnigy SK3 motor, while the Bomb uses a type of AXI Gold series motor. Be warned though, a drum needs a lot of machining to get right, anything wrong can send the whole system out of whack, start with a bar from an weed-whacker edger, As for drive, there's really no general consensus. I'm in the camp that prefers the Fingertech Spark motors, others like the small generic gearmotors that look a bit like this(There are dozens of motors like this one, with wildly differing stats, look around and you'll find one you'll like), while some take their chances with ebay and go for a motor more like this(AKA Silver Sporks, again with wildly varying stats). Whats good for one bot may be crap for another, experiment and see what works for you. Also, has anyone mentioned that spinners are extremely dangerous? Even an ant spinner can slice your skin straight down to the bone, and then some. Use extreme caution, or you'll be visiting the emergency room. |
