I'm of the opinion that the net was covered in the ".etc" part of the rule in S1 and quite frankly he should have been disqualified. It was a farce it was even let in the arena in the first place.
I'm under the theory that the reason he wasn't disqualified was because the creators were thinking that the moment would have created one of those shock moments. The type of moments that have a lasting impact on those that watch it, you know? If they completely disqualified him, that could have meant that they would have to scrap the fight off the episode and essentially, they wanted to spread out the entire situation for more commercials on the network.
It's just a theory and it may be a convoluted one. Someone else could probably explain this one better than I could.
