I don't know about you guys, but all I read there was something about the second amendment and negativity towards queers.

So... irony ?

I'm Northern Irish.

I'm Northern Irish.
Where would that count as?
Britain.
You are wrong.
Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales.
The United Kingdom consists of the aforementioned including Northern Ireland.
Geographically Northern Ireland counts as part of Ireland.
However due to the mixed areas in Northern Ireland some want it part of the United Kingdom while others want it part of a United Ireland while few (Including myself) want it Independent.
However since I have an Irish heritage I'll go in the other box.

If you knew the answer then why did you ask the question?

Well, the poll option is Great Britain, and politically, Great Britain only refers to England, Scotland and Wales, if the option were United Kingdom, British Isles, or United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island, it would be right. Obviously, this is from a completely pedantic standpoint.
-
muh anglo-saxon/celtic pride
09's right. If you're from the UK, pick Britain, as most of the world refers to the UK as Britain (or even England) anyway.

As much as I hate to say it Welsh is British. :(

It always has baffled me... is Great Britain an actual country? I thought it was a bunch a countries that are in the same region. It also upsets me that they compete in the olympics combined when smaller countries don't have that privilege.
Anywho I'm from Australia.

The UK is one country, just because it has constituent countries, doesn't deny its political status as a single entity. Funny how we compete as GB though, as Great Britain is just the main island lol.

The UK and US are similar in this way; on paper every state of the US could be it's own country (self governing and whatnot) but we're united by the federal branches of government. You guys (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) are all united by the royal family and parliament (I might be wrong there) excluding Northern Ireland (again I might be wrong there)

Man the opening ceremony at the Olympics would be so long if each state was a country.

I will make a few points to this.
1. In that video it says that those who are born in Northern Ireland are deemed British. That is untrue as people born in NI are given the choice to have either a British passport or an Irish passport or both if they wanted to same situation when an Olympian born in Northern Ireland can choose to compete with GB or Ireland.
2. Ireland is not related to the Commonwealth after about 1948 under the Irish constitution in which it will be declared as a Republic under the Taosicech or Irish parliament.

Britain isn't anything of the sort the United Kingdom is a country. Britain has no meaning.

So...
• Britain is a region
• The UK is a country
• England, Wales, etc are a country inside a country
?

Pretty much, Great Britain is the largest island in the British Isles. Britain is just England and Wales technically, but is a colloquialism for the whole thing.

I do, that was sarcasm. I just don't like Great Britain competing at the olympics when it is essentially 3 countries in one and no one else does this to my knowledge.
-
It's not 3 countries in 1. They're not independent from each other, you don't need a passport to cross Wales/England/Scotland. Scotland may potentially be fighting for it's independence from us in the future, in which case it will compete on it's own. Because it will be it's own country.
It is literally just like the states of USA, as far as I'm aware. It's not 3 independent countries.

Why do they compete independently in all other sports and events?
"Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom."
"England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom."
"Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom."
"Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It is variously described as a country, province or region of the UK, amongst other terms."
Looks like 4 countries in 1 larger country to me.

In a sense you could say the reverse - why DOESN'T Puerto Rico, for example, stick with the USA, seem as though they are part of the US? By choice. We have 1 Olympic Committee here.

Who gives a rat's ass, honestly? The only time Australia will have a chance is if they introduce a "Hunger Games" style competition. We know they can fight for their lives...

They're kind of both. States all have their own sovereignty (which is why different states have different laws), but all agree to conform to a unifying federal government, which allows us all to pool resources and share a bloated military.

England, Scotland, Wales, and Northen Ireland aren't considered sovereign states or dependencies.
Apparently "country" used to just be used to refer to geographic locations which explains why England etc. are called countries.

So why/how do they compete in other events individually like world cups and even the commonwealth games if they aren't countries?

So why/how do they compete in other events individually like world cups and even the commonwealth games if they aren't countries?
Well for the World Cup, it seems the FIFA allowed it with a bunch of other place that aren't actual countries. Seems a bit unfair to me but I'm not running the FIFA.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FIFA_Member_Associations#Others (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FIFA_Member_Associations#Others)
Just read about the Commonwealth Games and it seems it used to be called the "British Empire and Commonwealth Games", so I think the "British Empire" part gives away the reason why they compete.

Commonwealth games are "our" games to an extent, we made the rules :P
