Sprint Cars
« on: June 07, 2010, 01:44:46 PM »
This thread will probably be exclusive to JoeBlo and I since no one else here likes racing and most don't know what a sprint car is.

For those who don't know, a sprint car is a type of race car. It usually has a large wing on type of it that acts as a giant spoiler to create downforce and make it go extremely fast. Sprint cars are often referred to as "the fastest things on dirt". See picture below...

The first thing I would like to ask is strictly to JoeBlo.

Have you ever heard of a sprint car driver named Jesse Hockett? He is a driver from the United States that also drove in Australia for a period of time. He was the western Australia points champion in 2005.

Sadly, Jesse Hockett is no longer with us. He was lost in a non-racing incident on May 26, 2010. He was from Warsaw, Missouri and there were many memorial races for him held all over the U.S. the weekend after his death.

I was lucky enough to get to go to one of the memorial races. I was able to snap the above picture of Jesse's car being driven by another local driver in tribute to him.

If anyone else would like to join in this thread, they are welcome to. I doubt anyone else will, though.

I saw those a track near my house 3 years ago.
I remember some guy pulling off a wheelie because he was ticked that he had to go to the end of the field because he did something.

I saw some of those on a video once, I wondered what they were. Admittedly, all the clips on that video were of stuff crashing...but I still thought they were cool.

Didn't they formerly call these cars "Midgets"?  I remember watching World of Outlaw racing on ESPN's Thursday Night Thunder back in the day.  A young hotshot by the name Jeff Gordon was all the rage back then.  I could be wrong... maybe the "Midgets" were the ones without the wings.

terms are different in US but I think Midgets are indeed what US called the wingless ones

we call the wingless ones speedcars over here..

----------

HA: I would love to say I do know all about that driver but I haven't been the a sprint-car event in something like 4 years

I sometimes watch world series sprintcars on TV but nothing live anymore

my Dad used to be the crewcheif for a Solo Team (just some random pic off google just encase you dont know what they are)

and got us free tickets so I was front row at every speedway event at that time, keeping up with all the sprint-cars but when my Dad stopped crewing, I dropped out of interest in speedway and moved my way over to Drag Racing

still an awesome sport.. I have the front wing of a crashed car from years and years ago

I love racing
Mostly NASCAR though. I like the bumping o the cars and how they get all pissed at each other after races. Like Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick this weekend at Pocono.

Wow didn't even know that speedway existed...
I don't go to actual events much. I've gone to Hudson speedway a few times, and I went to New Hampshire International Speedway once for the Nextel Cup Qualifying (yep it was still called the Nextel Cup then), and there was going to be a modifieds race, but it was rained out.

Saw Kyle Busch crash in the #84 car though. Then the ambulances showed up and he just drove off to finish his lap but his car was all smashed up XD.

Hey wait... Do you live around here?

You would love dirt track racing, if that's the case.

Actually I live in Wilton. Next to Milford and Peterborough, you probably haven't heard of it. Nobody ever has...

Been through Antrim many times though, its on the way to my grandparents house in Acworth (doubt you've heard of that either, its near Charlestown and Bellows Falls, Vermont)

It's ok. I was just saying that you would like dirt track racing if you like how they bump and bang in NASCAR.

I just realized something... Prelude to the Dream is on Pay-Per-View tonight.

If you don't know what that is, it is a dirt late model race held at Eldora Speedway featuring mostly NASCAR drivers. Proceeds from the race will go to various children's hospitals this year.

You guys should check it out.
