Title: Video Games Made into Movies
Post by: GroudonRobotWars on March 03, 2012, 01:43:37 AM
So what do you guys think about these movies that were based on video games

Yeah, I know I went overboard on the posters, but there is also quite a bit more than all the ones I posted.

Also there are a few coming soon:

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D
Resident Evil: Retribution
Sonic the Hedgehog
RollerCoaster Tycoon

I have also seen some stuff on Wikipedia on the TF2 Page under the meet the character shorts that Valve are trying to get rights to have movies made for Team Fortress, Half Life and Portal, Could not be true, but still it is worth seeing if this will be possibly true.

So you can discuss what you want

You missed out Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which would probably be more appropriate than Spirits Within as it is a sequel to Final Fantasy VII.

I haven't really seen many of those. Prince of Persia wasn't too bad from what I saw of it, I'm not sure about Tron (not seen enough of it to make a judgement, although I have heard bad things), Neither of the Tomb Raider ones were too terrible (I will need to watch them again at some point...although I did see them on TV rather than DVD), and Spirits Withing wasn't really that bad, it just didn't feel much like Final Fantasy really. Heard that the others (excluding Super Mario Brothers) are rather good, and that the sequels (if any) were rather poor.

I did love Advent Children though, especially the extended Blu-Ray version.

I am actually thinking that the RCT movie is going to do average when it comes out, I heard it is supposed to come out in 2014(could be later though) which is kind of a bad year for it because of what is coming out that exact year (Transformers 4, Amazing Spiderman 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Avatar 2, Mockingjay, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 3D, and many more still to be announced)

The Street Fighter movie? Most of its so-bad-it's-good appeal is in Raul Julia's performance as Bison- that was awesome. Especially with this line-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8DlZg5KPl8#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8DlZg5KPl8#ws)

And even to this day, it's still far more enjoyable to watch than that other adaptation they made in 2010. That was just crap.

Just one thing I seen:

TRON: Legacy isn't a video game made into a movie. It is the sequel to the original TRON from 1982, which begat 2 video games: TRON and Discs of TRON.

Advent Children was awesome. I, personally, enjoyed Spirits Within, although I haven't seen it in a while. It didn't really have the Final Fantasy feel to it, though.

... and they should be Directed by Guy Richie.  (Lock stock and two smoking barrels, Snatch, rock and rolla, etc etc)

I would love to see a movie version of Flat Out 2.  <3

Out of all the movies mentioned in this thread... I have to say that Resident Evil is my favorite game-to-movie.  I find it incredibly enjoyable every time I watch it.

You also fail to remember that Pokemon started off as a simple role playing game on Gameboy before the TV series and Movie franchise.  :D

RCT movie? Whaa? Why?
From Wiki:
Sony Pictures Animation(makers of The Smurfs and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) has reserved the rights to a feature film based on the video game franchise. They plan to make it a "live-action/CGI hybrid". Harald Zwart will be involved in the project.[2]

So it could likely be an Action and Comedy genre. Let's just hope the protaganist is not a young kid and atleast a teen or adult.

But I also unfortunately own the DVD of the titanic animated movie, so my spot of worst film ever is forever taken.

The legend goes on I believe, it came with a bundle of other DVDs a fair few years back.
I still have it, though it'll be stored in the attic now.
I didn't realize it had such a bad reputation when I first watched it, but I turned it off at the rapping dog section.

Right, that'll be the first one The Critic reviewed, then. That was bloody awful, but very slightly less so compared to the other one. Whilst T:TLGO was stupid, TLOTT was just disgustingly insulting, summing up everything wrong with the Animation Age Ghetto.

As for the turning off at the Rapping Dog bit- a wise decision, my armour-plated arachnid friend.

Doing a short bump to update on what is coming soon.

It looks RCT is not the only video game getting a film:

These are the other games being made into films:

God of War (Warner Bros)
Mass Effect (Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures)
Uncharted (Columbia Pictures)
Assassin's Creed (Columbia Pictures)
World of Warcraft (Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures)
Dead Island (Lionsgate Studios and Twisted Pictures)
Deus Ex (Columbia Pictures)
Half Life (????)
Team Fortress (????)
A new reboot to Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros and New Line Cinemas)

There may be more, but these are the only ones I found out about.

Flatout movie would have Brutal Bone-Crunching gore.
Resident Evil is probably the best game-to-movie anyway.
I would like to see an Okami movie just to see how they would do it or an Unreal Tournament movie (Gory fighting acshuns!)

If TF2 was in a movie, I'd like it to almost be a cameo - like the characters of the film shopping at a 'Mann Co' supermarket, where there's a weapons stall with only 1 Heavy or something at it, and a hat stall which is crowded like heck :P

Dunno, but from the sounds of it apparently Valve will be there to make sure that a bad plot for it and Half Life will not be made, so they probably will be calling the shots on the script by the sounds of it. No studio has been announced, something more might be said after the meet the pyro video gets released sometime this year.

Apparently for the Mortal Kombat movie they want to make it like the game, and they want it to be rated R so they can make it like the game, it was also confirmed for fall of 2013

Hitman.

It didn't have the same feel as the games, but they did a good job of giving background and some kind of plot. The guy's role wasn't really as subtle as that which he played in the games (Stealing a postman's clothes or something and going in to kill one guy).

TF2 actually has the most potential to be a good movie; normally a video game movie is bound by the plot of its source material, but TF2 doesn't really have a plot

If they do it right, the Metal Gear Solid movie (I'm guessing it's going to be a movie of The Twin Snakes) will make even the biggest haters of Metal Gear Solid and Kojima Productions interested.

Doing it right would mean:
-Summoning and redistributing Otacon's emotions about Sniper Wolf and Battlefield Love and all that good stuff
-Making the Psycho Mantis scene ABSOLUTELY PERFECT
-Though they don't have to do much, capturing the same emotions that the Raging Raven boss fight gave
-Alot of the Codec humor and general innuendos that are famous with MGS
-Getting Gray Wolf's death right.
And as a side note, BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

If I remember correctly... It was more that Microsoft and PJ were having conflicts about how the movie should be.  Ultimately, Microsoft wasn't pleased with the direction of how things were going.

They actually made some vehicles for the movie before it got cancelled.  Very cool.

Resident Evil Retribution just started on friday. I will be seeing it soon, so I will post a review if I ever have time. It currently has made more than its budget by a little bit. Also a sequel was hinted that if this Resident Evil did well a 6th and final movie in the series would be made.

Silent Hill Revelations just got a trailer, and it looks quite good.

A Prototype movie could be epic...shame the company that made it and its sequel died. Sales of Prototype 2 were so bad that it killed the company.

Ok, so Silent Hill Revelations just started in theaters today.

It should be noted that the movie is getting good reviews from users. So generally this could mean that maybe this might be an upturn for video game movies, as this could possibly be the best video game movie.

I plan on seeing the new Silent Hill movie this weekend.

Arnie, or Stallone...Although they may be a little bit old for the role. Someone manly and epic.

Yeah, I heard they originally were planning on having Arnold play the role of Duke back in the early 2000's but because he got into politics the idea faded away for whatever reason and the team who were supposed to do the Duke Nukem movie went on to do a Max Payne movie instead which was released in 2008.

Arnie could've done it back then, but 12 years later? No. I can't really think of anyone who could do it now.

Recently found some new interesting news.

Castle Wolfenstein and Grand Theft Auto will in fact be getting movies.

Tomb Raider has had its release date changed, so it will not be out next year. Also a Heavy Rain movie has been given a Release date of November 2013(This could still change) and Mortal Kombat will officially be in theaters August 16 2013.

And you'd be correct.
For one thing, I find it amazing that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li somehow managed to be even worse than the other Street Fighter movie. Whilst the latter was so bad it was good (Mainly being rescued by Raul Julia's performance as M Bison), the former was just so bad...it was bad.

Well, except maybe for Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog- apparently, he was the only one there to have actually played any of the games!
