The Nature of Evil
« on: October 14, 2009, 07:58:40 PM »
Many people use the term "evil" to describe things. But it is, like many other things, simply an opinion. What I would like to know is what you consider evil to be, and why you consider it so. Please, discuss.

I consider evil as another way to say bad, except putting more emphasis. I think this way because everything can be evil, depending who you are.

Evil is anyone who doesn't care how their actions affect everyone.

"Evil" is amazing song by Mercyful Fate. It deals with necrophilia.

I was born on the cemetery
Under the sign of the moon
Raised from my grave by the dead
I was made a mercenary
In the legions of Hell
Now I'm king of pain, I'm insane

You know my only pleasure
Is to hear you cry
I'd love to hear you cry
I'd love to feel you die
And I'll be the first
To watch your funeral
And I'll be the last to leave
I'd love to hear you cry

And when you're down beyond the ground
I'll dig up your body again
And make love to shame
Oh lady cry, and say goodbye
Oh lady cry, and say goodbye

You've gotta say goodbye
'Cause I will eat your mind
Destroy your lives, on purpose!

Great thread.

Well for evil... it can be applied to a person or an act.

An evil person is the epithome of selfishness. Not only they are interested in their only person, but they have no problems with doing it at the expense of others. They will "help" people only if it benefits them, and at best do not care if people do suffer.
They can do it for pleasure as well, or seek actively to harm others.

Evil can be used for good as well, as killing a tyrant or a mass murderer.

The ultimate act of evil, in my opinion, is killing. Now it can be necessary, and honestly if i have no other choice (self-defense) or if it would benefit me (very) greatly without bringing me any problem, i would kill.

Yes, true neutral ftw

This is not necessarily evil - you can perfectly be like that and do good deeds.

I think people in jail for more than 20 years are evil because that means they must have done something bad to get that much time.

Yes, an epic song indeed. I believe Metallica did a cover of it.

As for the nature of evil, that is a much more difficult thing to find the answer to than you might think. Try to give an all-encompassing definition of good or evil. What makes good good and evil evil?
im just waiting for meganerdbomb to come along and kick things into gear.

Yes, an epic song indeed. I believe Metallica did a cover of it.

Metallica did a medley of several Mercyful Fate songs. Within the medley, they covered most of the song "Evil".

Someone just sent me a PM asking about this. Is there a thread where I can read these conspiracy theories, or is this just a coincidence?

A good way to tell if the account is mine is to check the location of the images used. I only have one Photobucket account (furezo), so it's really quite easy to know if it's me. Of course, somebody could be stealing my images, but I usually try to diffuse that by changing the file names.

Getting the thread back on track:

Man is inherently evil.

One of our greatest gifts is also our flaw... We have an awareness that makes us judge ourselves and those around us.

When a lion kills a lamb to feast upon it for survival.  The lion does not weep for the lamb. Nor does it feel guilt for killing. (to our knowledge at least)

Killing is part of the natural order of things. It is imperative for survival. I think mankinds various interpretations of "evil" are distorted. For every thousand people that will chastise you for committing murder on another human being... there are another thousand that will chastise you for eating a hamburger.  It all comes down to the intent.

I think that malicious intent is a sign of evil. Similar to what Naryar explained. I agree with what he said mostly.

I think there are plenty of innocent human beings that are judged poorly.  Because everyone has a variable degree of right vs wrong and too many people want their right vs wrong to be YOURS as well.

This is why religious groups can't seem to get along... which causes wars and bloodshed. Because they cannot agree.... Yet, in their minds... they do not consider themselves evil.
