I hate both macs and pcs. Just thought I'd point that out.

With a PC, when it comes to upgrading it from say, Windows XP to Windows 7, you are forced to shut down all running applications for the installation to complete. The only problem is, after pages of License Agreements, and trying to make out the crappy font for the system key in order to type it in, you are then told that upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 does not work. You can't go back to do a custom rewriting installation, so the only option you have is to quit out of the installer. You did all that for nothing!

So instead, you decide to install it via booting from the CD when the computer is starting up. So you start by completely removing Windows XP from your computer. Oh but no! It turns out that the uninstall application for Windows XP wasn't installed correctly. So you then decide to insert the Windows XP install disc to open the recovery console and re-install the program, but it turns out you can't open it whilst XP is running. So you reset the computer, and when it says "Press Any Key To Boot From CD" you press enter, that doesn't work. You press every other key. That doesn't work. And then the computer starts running Windows. So your stuck there, unable to uninstall or re-install.

Your keyboard decides not to function when booting from CD, so you're stuck at the BIOS setup, with the only option being to reset the computer. You do that, but then when starting up, the computer then goes into a lock screen, saying that it did not start successfully! So you have to wait for a minute whilst the computer counts down, because remember, the keyboard isn't working.

After you've finally managed to do that, the only option you have is to do a fresh installation, erasing all your files and folders. You can't make a backup, because the computer doesn't recognise the files after the installation!

^All that for just something as simple as an upgrade^

Now with a mac, life is clearly easier. Shutting down applications, for example, is very easy to do. You don't have to do any keyboard shortcuts, you don't have to press the "X" button, you don't have to do anything. The app just closes automatically. You didn't ask it to, you didn't even save! And then the system locks up! So you do the force quit keyboard shortcut, which is CMD-alt-hash or something, so you do what appears to be a move from twister, when you realise you don't have the hash key, because you're using a bloody laptop! It isn't included on the keyboard!

When it comes to shutting the computer down, that's completely different. You try and close the running programs, and then the computer locks up! You can't do the CMD-alt-hash, because you don't have hash, so you press the off button. But oh wait, that doesn't work either! You're pressing it many times, but the computer just has a mind of its own. So if you're using a normal mac, then you pull out the power cable, but if you're using a laptop, you can't access the battery to pull that out, BECAUSE APPLE HAVE SEALED IT IN!

Another feature is when you're trying to copy files from a CD. You put the CD in, and the files play automatically! You try and shut them down, and then the system freezes! You do CMD-alt-hash again, that doesn't work. So you drag the CD into the trash can to try and eject it, and then the system freezes again!

So I've finally managed to install Windows 7, but now it doesn't see my ethernet cable! There's no Local Area Connection, nothing!

My girlfriend has exactly the same problem that you do. We managed to get into Services and turn on a few things, but one of the things refused to turn on, and we had no idea how to do that.

Figured it out. Because I built my computer from scratch, I needed to re-install motherboard drivers.

7 go on about making things easier for new computer users, but they make it harder for more competent users like myself.
