While technically an infinite amount of bots can be made, most of the effective designs have already been done. Bots that are essentially clones populate the showcases due to very limited choices, and lack of human creativity.

That wasn't my point, though. The game was released 7 years ago in the bargain bin. This means that even when it was new, the exposure to the masses was very limited. Now, people either have to be told about the game, or they have to happen to stumble upon it. With no Battlebots on TV, mainstream interest in robot combat is essentially gone. Without the mainstream attention, you can't exactly expect that a large group of people will remain interested in a game that hasn't been officially supported in years.
