Theres no way that opening a smoke detector will expose you to a harmful amount of radiation.

Americium 124 ( I think) used to be used in Ionizing smoke detectors. My house was built in 2003 so I don't think we have them......................

My house is 15 years old, and we've opened a detector once, and I'm not growing a third arm.

How am I to remember? Besides the point is that you couldn't put something known to be lethal in a common persons house like that.

It's very very safe. the small dose they put in them isn't even enough to kill you, it just needs it to Ionize and sense smoke. (more on that later)

Don't drink your water as there is most likely some amount of radiation in there as well.
