sidewalk makes sense, it's on each side of the road, and you walk on it.
But the point of bumper cars is to bump into people, not dodge them.

Because if someone was trying to learn english, what would make more sense to them, a dodgem, or a bumper car ?
a bumper car obviously because they're little cars that you bump into, self explanatory.
But if someone who was learning english in britain, they'd be called dodgems and have to ask someone on the street what the hell that is, and they'd probably get a look like they're retarded.
