I was up at 23:30 when they confirmed Dan's death on Sky News.

Dan Wheldon was killed in a 15 car pile up in IndyCar racing in Las Vegas.
As for the Husemans, I think it was a plane crash.

15 car pile up?! Chances of suriving that are zero. That also reminds me of a 14-year-old girl in the city centre getting hit and stuck under a double-decker bus and the screaming you could hear from a mile away. What happened is that they got a forklift under the bus but girl died when the lifting up happened. Sad Story. Oh well time to move on. :(

It is very possible to survive a fifteen car pile up. Although when those cars are traveling in excess of 230 mph, it's another story.

Dan Wheldon's death is a tragedy, as they were concerned about the speeds at Las Vegas Motor Speedway all week long. The whole thing could have been prevented.

The other two is tragic, too, but sh** happens.

According to people I've been talking to, they seem to think that Dan Wheldon's death might bring in a new era of safety in Indycar events, in a similar fashion to how Ayrton Senna's death brought in new levels of safety in Formula One here in Europe. Personally, I hope that does happen, it's never an entertaining scenario if a sportsman is killed on the job.

Terribly sad and a major screw up to have had that many cars racing in that race in the first place.

Yeah, looks like it'll be affecting more than just indy car now. The FIA are apparently discussing closed or semi-closed cockpits again for F1. Could set a precedent IMO.

MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli was killed in an accident in Malaysia today.

It's starting to get a bit scary...

BS. Tire comes into a cockpit and smashes the drivers head in. Happened plenty of times in open cockpit stuff.

Famous people die in threes.

Wheldon
Huseman
Simoncelli

Theoretically this should be it.

How so? Of all open cockpit racing, F1 takes the most precautions against tires flying around like that, in particular since the last death in F1 was caused by a rogue tyre. Think about it, in comparison to pre-2000 racing, how often do you see tyres fly off of F1 cars? It's been happening less and less each year.
The only BS here is that famous people die in threes idea? Why d'you even put that?

Also I might point out that both Rick and Jeff Huseman were sadly lost

So the Motorsport world has sadly lost 4 people in the last 2 weeks..  :frown:

I didn't know that Jeff raced, but I'd heard that he'd been lost too.

@Scorp: Its an open wheel car. If it can happen in NASCAR where a whole car DOESN'T put the entire force of the hit into another car's tire, then it can happen in F1 where a whole car does put the entire force of the hit into another car's tire.

I think this is the right place to put it:

Marco Simoncelli. R.I.P. your flamboyant nature and great riding skills will always be missed. Thank you for blessing the MotoGP world and your legacy shall live on.
