Hello Gametechmods Forum members and welcome to the first installment of: Robot Film Reviews
This thread will be dedicated to film reviews based on robot oriented films that have been released over the years. Maybe some of the reviews will convince you to purchase the film in the future... or maybe it will be a trip down memory lane. In any case, feedback is appreciated, debate is encouraged, and you can even write your own review on a film if you want.
Reviewed Films will have robots as one of the main characters or themes. I do realize that a lot of films have robots used in the special effects... but I am going to aim to review films that are focused on robots instead.
Master List for Possible Reviews:
Robot Jox
Robot Wars
Short Circuit (or SC2)
AI ?
I Robot

ROBOT JOX (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102800/)

1990
85 mins length
Rated: PG, Mild Nudity, Strong Language, Violence
Are you a fan of Mechwarrior? This is going to be the closest you are going to get to a Mechwarrior film. Made in 1990, computer graphics were still outside the budget of most small-time film crews. The robots were designed and animated with old-school style stop-motion animation. Done to an incredible effect, the robots look natural for stop-motion. At times, the acting is laughably bad, but the film is still a fun treat to watch (especially after a few beers). There are some pretty riotous one-liners in the movie that are not intended to be funny, but they are. For a film made in 1990 with a small budget, the special effects are pretty nice. The atmosphere is set, and the world is pretty believable. The main character, Achilles, is played by Gary Graham. His main enemy is played by Paul Koslo, who plays Alexander. It is a great popcorn flick, worth watching if you are a fan of all things robots. Don't expect excellent acting or stunning cinematography, but do expect a fun dosage of entertainment, and a rare display of robot combat before the Michael Bay "Transformers" era.
Plot (stolen from imdb.com): 50 years after a nuclear war, the two superpowers handle territorial disputes in a different way. Each fields a giant robot to fight one-on-one battles in official matches, each piloted by a man inside, known as robot jockeys or jox. The contest for possession of Alaska will be fought by two of the best. The conscientious Achilles fights for the Americans. Opposing him is a Russian, Alexander, a ruthless and bloodthirsty adversary who has killed his previous nine American opponents. With a traitor feeding the Russians secret weapons information and new, genetically-engineered jox looking to take his place, Achilles faces obstacles at every turn in the hardest battle of his life.

I hate it when movies stereotype robots as being humanoids that need oil and go "cant compute" REAL ROBOTS AREN'T LIKE THAT!
ROBOTS is stereotypical and i hated it.

The Iron Giant (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129167/)

1999
86 mins length
Rated: PG, Fantasy Action, mild language
Directed by Brad Bird of "the Incredibles" fame. This film is thoroughly enjoyable for kids and adults alike. I remember when this came out in the theaters, and I didn't see it because it looked too "kiddy like". Well I was totally wrong. It has a very mature plot. The characters are nicely developed and the Robot... OMGSH! the robot is brilliant. Even though it is animated, the character is amazing and believable. It is amazing to see the soulless character struggle with very human like emotions. If you have not seen this film, I very much recommend it. You will wonder why you never watched it before. The animation is top notch (and this is before Brad was involved full-swing with Pixar).
Plot (stolen from imdb.com): What if a gun had a soul? A gigantic mobile weapon from another planet is sent to destroy Earth, but is damaged on arrival and loses its memory. It is soon befriended by a young boy, Hogarth, who is an outcast at school and relishes the chance to have a real friend. However, soon the paranoid government agent Kent Mansley arrives in town, determined to destroy the giant at all costs.
