Title: RA2 ALMOST works on Ubuntu
Post by: russian roulette on August 18, 2010, 09:48:07 PM
Meh... I use Ubuntu and I am trying to get it to run smoothly with WineHQ, the game almost works but stops when the main menu is present... any ideas?

The same problem is present with running RA2 on wine since... ever (and I do mean ever - I remember having it around 5 years ago).

I'll try to find which function calls are buggy, fix them and submit patches to the devs. When I have the time.

Also, good job on running Ubuntu! I hope you enjoy it.

Yep, I think Ubuntu is a good way to go. Although it isn't mainstream, it sure feels like it.

It's way more mainstream than any other Linux-based OS.

Haha, right, forgot about that. I meant the Linux kernel on desktop PCs.

Android

What?
It's a mobile os based off of Linux and owned by Google, there are close to 100 device that have the os.

I used to run Yellow Dog on my Mac ages ago.

Might build a second pc to run Ubuntu sometime. Looks really slick.

I dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows 7 on my laptop. I prefer the speed and customization of Linux over Windows.

It would be really cool if RA2 worked in Ubuntu so that I didn't have to load up Windows all the time. Whenever I load RA2 in wine, it always has to switch the number of "Users" to 0 (which doesn't make any sense to me) before it will get stuck in the main menu. Wine doesn't appear to be translating the system mouse's direct input correctly.

I got to say though, Ubuntu is a really cool os and I believe having the taskbar sorted more fluently and having a built in app center really gets my juices flowing.

Ubuntu is desktop only, not mobile. Android is it's mobile counterpart-ish.

Why and no. Ubuntu would be great as probably a tablet DEVICE (I stay away from saying pc because you and I both know that a  net book sized touchscreen running iOS isn't a f**king pc) it would be great because I find with most tablets, bloatware and Ubuntu pretty much has none of it.

Ubuntu is pretty bloated when compared to other distributions, like Debian or Arch.

True but when compared to Mac OSX and Windows 7, I am pretty happy with pre-installed software.

Nothing wrong with it other than lack of affordable desktop hardware and Apple's semi-annoying software restrictions.

Hate is a strong word. Also, have you ever used OS X? It's a nice little os, built on BSD, yet it has eye candy and is really user-friendly. And its kernel, XNU, is pretty sweet too.

Apple is the Graphic Design industry standard down here, I love my windows for games and such but when it comes to graphic work a Mac is so much better with programs.. I wished I owned my own one  :gawe:

Hell, my PowerMac G3 still does a decent job of running Photoshop.
