Oh Linux...
« on: June 04, 2011, 01:13:59 PM »
Well, I got a new computer from school as they bought too many and were giving some out. I got one, took it home, plugged it in and it had Linux 9.1. I went to set the internet up and realised that it was missing the program that most guides recommend when setting the internet up. "Oh well" I thought. I managed to find a different way to setup the internet and typed in all of the correct things (WEP key, SSID etc) and opened up the internet. Nothing. It didn't work. "I must've typed something in wrong" I thought and tried again. Nothing. By this time I was getting quite annoyed so, I went and downloaded the program from a different computer, put it onto a USB stick and... The computer doesn't have any drivers installed! So, I go and try to install them... OWAIT, the internet doesn't work!

So, to cut a long story short, my computer has:
-Linux 9.1
-No programs
-No drivers
-No point

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What distribution are you running? "Linux" is not an OS in itself. It's a kernel, and its latest version is 2.6.3something, with a 3.0 release candidate.

Yeah, probably, but I wanna make sure. There is no Ubuntu 9.1, however, there is 9.10, Karmic Koala.

Yup, Ubuntu. I got told by the teacher that gave it to me that it was 9.1, so I suppose it must be 9.10.

There's no drivers? That comes as a great surprise, distro considering. My recommendation (being a strong Linux user for 4 years now) is to download the Ubuntu 10.10. I do not recommend the latest, as that version refuses to have widespread wireless driver support OoB, while 10.10 does. It also has supported every USB stick and CD driver I've ever used.

btw: here's a direct link to 10.10. http://mirror.umoss.org/ubuntu-iso//10.10/ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso
Hope this'll help you out!

What he said. 9.10 is a pretty old Ubuntu release, but it should work just fine. My guess is that you're somehow "doing it wrong", but I can't be sure. You can always upgrade to 10.10 via the software update manager, it's buried there somewhere in the Preferences->Administration menu.

I thought about the software manager as well, Serge. Problem is, atm he can't get to the internet on the computer in question. He'd pretty much have to burn the ISO/purchase a burnt CD online on his family computer to have any luck; less he's able to figure out some way to connect to the internet on it.
