Title: New Computer ?
Post by: Naryar on April 09, 2010, 11:18:26 AM
So my Macbook keeps failing (now the HD is damaged visibly, yet it works) and i am really looking forward to buy a new comp.

I went to a local store and saw this : Acer Aspire 7715Z-444G50Mn

But am not sure about the quality. Is Acer good ?

I have an Acer PC. It seems to work fine, but I've never tested it to the extreme.

Acer hardware is horrible. The power jacks fail (on all the four laptops my family owned). Their support is horrible, and they lost my PDA. Do not buy. Also avoid HP computers, they fail very fast.

If you want a laptop, you can't go wrong with Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPads.

I love my Acer desktop. <3  It has been very good to me.

Serge is right about Lenovo laptops... but be prepared to pay much more. (they are often more expensive for the same specs)

I don't agree about the hardware or power jacks though.  Their quality is usually very good and has improved a ton over the past 3 years.  Their support is, indeed, horrible though.

Well, I must've hit bad luck with that Acer hardware I owned.

Lenovo's higher price is worth the price - that laptop will last you forever.

Depends on how many years you plan on using this laptop.  I had to send my Acer for repair within the first week, then it lasted about 3 years.  Get them if you want something cheap and disposable.  I won't buy an Acer for over 700 dollars.

IBM laptop cost more and will last, but it can't avoid being obsolete even if it's still operational.

Hahahaha. I've had terrible experience with Acer laptops. My friend told me HPs and Sonies aren't worth the price. No one in school owns a Lenovo, but our teacher owns an Asus, and he's pretty satisfied with the performance.

Oh hey, Just wanted to throw this out there, Toshiba makes really good laptops these days.  They also price them fair now (they used to be like Sony but they wised up).  I have a couple of Toshiba models at my store that sell for less than 700 bucks and they are nicely designed / equipped.  Might be worth looking into, because I have heard pretty good things about Toshiba's support.

Doesn't Toshiba = HP?

Nah, They are totally independant companies.  HP will often use Toshiba branded drives and RAM in their computers (because Toshiba manufactures those components).

In case you were mixed up:

Compaq = HP  (HP bought compaq out 4 or 5 years ago.  They use the Compaq name for their cheaper / low end stuff.)
E-Machines = Acer  (Acer bought out E-machines appx 3 years ago for the same reason)
Gateway = Dell?  (Gateway was bought up... I think it was by Dell but I am fuzzy on that one)
Alienware = Dell  (Unfortunately, Dell bought up Alienware to beef up their high-end gaming division... It also put the brand in Best Buy as a result)

No, I think Gateway and Dell are different. I'm using a Gateway laptop now... maybe the names are separate, IDK. They could be owned by Dell, I'm no expert.
I was wondering what happened to Compaq though.

I just looked it up... and I was wrong about them being owned by Dell.

They are actually owned by Acer as well.  I had forgot about that because, initially, Gateway first bought E-Machines to have a cheap computer lineup with a different name.  When Acer acquired e-Machines they also bought up Gateway as part of the deal.

Gateway still operates pretty independently from Acer though. They still have most of their original tech-support offices.  E-machines on the other hand is totally absorbed by Acer and really bears no resemblance to the original company that it once was.

My dell doesn't explode. At least not this one. My old dell 3 computers ago the chipset heatsink fell off because it was glued on instead of clipped... It fried the motherboard.

Title: Re: New Computer ?

Is E-Machines good ?

E-Machines is Acer's cheap cheap cheap brand.  I have had pretty good luck with their monitors so far... But their computers on the other hand are manufactured with very low-end components.  Because of this, they are usually unfriendly with upgrades like Video Cards.  I, honestly, don't think you would be very happy with an E-Machines computer.
Title: Re: New Computer ?

If Acer is low end, and E-Machine is even worst.....  It will be like a n00b trying to troll by spamming fail-bots with a different username.

my list
1. gateway
2. hp

acer is TERRIBLE and I mean it, the plastic is cheap and wobbly, they are extremely poorly made. The hinges on the laptops they make are extremely fragile... basically they suck.
my laptop is a 14.1 gateway 2gb memory, with black patterned plastic (really easy to scratch) and a brushed aluminum sort of material. I love it

My suggestion, build one from individually ordered parts. Contrary to how it seems, it's not hard. If you think about it, the parts come from all over the world and they have to make sure that anyone, anywhere can put them together. Each part will only fit in one place, one way.

Slightly more on topic, though, Acer's not too bad, Gateway isn't good, HP's alright, Dell's a no-no, and Alienware's like burning money.

This is true, you really are just snapping premade parts together. There is a downside to this though: be prepared for four months of reading reviews and browsing Newegg before you're completely satisfied.

I know that,  but they are still separate mostly.

Heheh. It's cool. I was just picking on yah in a friendly way.

I, honestly find this entire thread to be amusing because everyone seems to base their opinion on their individual experience.  Computers are so fickle in general that sometimes you win sometimes you lose.  Heck, 80 percent of the time computer problems are software/config issues that aren't even related to the construction quality of the machine.

Customers bring computers into our tech dept all the time complaining that the computer is "a piece of crap" because it runs slow.  But, usually, they are idiots that are running 10 Explorer windows of Flash based Pron with only 1 gig of RAM while trying to multitask a billion other things.

On the subject of hardware failures, our number one repair request is hard drives.  And even though your computer can be an Acer, HP, Compaq, Gateway, whatever... it is still going to most likely have a drive made by Toshiba, Hitachi, Western Digital, etc etc.  Most of these computer companies use the same drives by the same manufacturers.

The other common failure is Power Supplies.  And this is why I don't favor Dell because their power supplies (Laptop and Desktop) are usually proprietary and have to be replaced directly through them.  Proprietary construction methods = headache when you want to repair the machine yourself (boooo Dell and Sony)

It is a mixed bag.  My Acer desktop has been good to me, but the Acer laptop that I sold my neighbor just broke last week.  (video ribbon cable is coming loose, resulting in a finicky screen when opened)  My friends brand new Dell barfed a hard drive after only 4 months of use.  They sent a tech out to replace it, but it was still disappointing.   My Apple laptop is 12 years old and works fine for what I use it.  The only thing wrong with it, is the daughtercard fried and it wont charge the battery anymore.  But I just use it on my desk, so I don't care.  I have an old Dell desktop that runs strong and happy, but my folks Dell laptop has been giving them trouble since day one.

So, really, at this point Naryar. All I can say is:  "Don't buy a brand you have never even heard of."  :P

If you're still wondering about Acers, I've had my Aspire 2920 Laptop for almost three years or so now, and aside from the hard drive losing magnetism a few months ago (they told me it was just being overused a little bit, and it was a good excuse to get Windows 7), everything still seems to be working fine. 2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, graphics card seems fine to me, but if you want to upgrade it, then you probably could. Plastic skin seems slightly loose on one corner, but that's more or less just aesthetics, and the specs are pretty much good enough for what I tend to use it for. I can get around three or four applications going at once (IE8, Paint.NET, GP5, WMP, mostly) without any significant lag. And it should hold together provided that you look after it properly, carrying it around, storage and such.

I have been buying Toshiba for about 5 years, and had one total piece of junk, and my favorite one lasted 2 years and then the motherboard went bad and they wanted over $600.00 to fix after keeping it for about 8 months.
If it goes bad after warranty......just go buy a new one and don't mess with them.
They did fix 2-3 that were still under warranty and got them back to me pretty quick.

I'm considering purchasing an Alienware computer. It turns out they aren't nearly as expensive as I've always heard they were.

Anyone know of a laptop with an integrated 9800 series card? That would run it.
Apples are the best computers for gaming.

Why?

Because all hardware is built by apple (for the most part) meaning everything fits together much more nicely and the Intel processors and graphics cards are usually top notch. But the Mac OS sucks, so install windows 7 on it.

anyone have some graphics/ video card suggestions ? (from people that actually know what they are talking about and not just listing what is in there friends computer)

My current hardware..

CPU Speed: Intel Duel Core, 2.39 GHz Performance Rated at: 3.585 GHz

RAM: 2gb

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

Current Video Card: Intel(R) GMA 3100

Video RAM 384.0 MB
Pixel Shader version 2.0

I want nothing worse obviously, something good, compatible, with Hardware T&L and Vertex Shader version 2.0 (at least) and probably not to expensive.

any thoughts?

That is absolute bullsh**.

Apple doesn't "build" their hardware. A Mac is just a PC with a TPM (trusted platform module) so it is allowed to be running OS X. It's the same manufacturers who make components for them and for any other computer company.

A component is a component - doesn't matter who are they made by (actually, most components are made by the same manufacturers - realtek, samsung, amd, nvidia, intel), and they all follow standards. A Gigabyte motherboard is gonna work with a Sapphire graphics card the same way an Asus motherboard will work with a ENVGA graphics card or an Asus motherboard with an Asus graphics card. Why? Because it's the same design (for graphics cards) and the same chips (for every computer component). Companies who sell components usually buy designs from chip manufacturers (unless they overclock their components), slap their logo onto it and ship it.

Looks like you have an old slow computer, and just about ANY video card will be better.

Just get an ATI based video card in your budget range and it will be much better than you have.

BS SURE to check what type slot you have ......like AGP, PCI, PCI-E as they do not interchange.

You need way more RAM. It's cheap these days, get at least 4GB. Also, new graphics card.

computer is about 2 years old... just wondering, I was considering buying an i5 or i7

You'll need to make sure your motherboard and power supply can run those things. Ram doesn't use a lot of power add as much as your OS can support. But high powered video cards can use hundreds of watts, and a new i7 probably won't be supported by something that old.
