Title: Ibanez
Post by: Lupus on June 20, 2011, 12:15:27 PM
I found an Ibanez GSA06LTD on sale for about 115 pounds, what do you guys think? i REALLY need a good guitar and an Ibanez is the way i want to go.

I wouldn't recomend it. Agathis isn't the greatest tonewood and the tremolo is unlocked. It also generally looks a fairly average instrument with the bolt on neck. I'd try and get one of the LTD starter models due to the 24 fret neck and basswood body; Basswood is used even on some truly amazing instruments like Music Man Petrucci's, so it's reputable tonewood.

The LTD Viper 10 also weighs comparatively little due to the Basswood body. Specs are otherwise very similar and it's a very customizable guitar at the price-point of £160

The guitar I started the thread about was sold within 10 minutes of me clicking "post". Is the guitar you have told me about good for rock and metal?

Sure is. Tell us your budget and I could suggest some others within it.

So you prefer the exact same price from eBay over a new one from Thomann? Right...

Just because the one you tried sucked; the lower price ones are apparently very good for the price point.

On the subject of Ibanezeseseses, I bought a second-hand Ibanez Gio the other day, with a quite wide but shallow gash in the neck behind the 12th fret. It still plays well, and was 85 quid, was that good?

A few months ago I picked up a Ibanez Soundgear IJXB190 bass (not my picture:

It was 85 euros, but it had some paint damage. Still love it :)

(yes, I play bass, and I play piano)

Thomann is still more reliable. and professional.
I own an Ibanez RG320PG. Decent guitar, but the Edge III it has is frankly awful.

Edge 3?
Also i shall hopefully be ordering the guitar in an hour or two.

Edge 3?
A double locking tremolo system like a Floyd Rose, but made of subpar materials and lacking tuning stability.

If you want some a small amp and a strap, then the second one.
I would still buy from Thomann because it's much simpler than eBay.

Go for it, you get some picks as a bonus.
Plus you can use the small one you get as a practice amp.

I would stay away from anything with an edge III. Otherwise the guitars are so similar I would simply have the cheaper option, which is the Viper.

The guitar is fluttershying awesome, it's everything i need at the moment.I thought it was small, but then i realised that's the size alot of metal guitars are, and that a bigger size would suck. Thanks madman SO much for your help. :D

(pretty sure gametechmods is strict on swearing from what i've seen >_> so ill just over use fluttershy from now on)

Title: Re: Ibanez
Post by: madman3 on July 02, 2011, 04:45:41 PM
Don't worry, a guitar that cheap won't exactly sell anyway.

That is just a trait of Basswood, it tends to get dented relatively easily. Still a great tonewood, and it's better than the Agathis ones Scorp tried.

Just be careful with it, I've kept my Basswood  AND second hand Ibanez RG320PG alive and basically undamaged for a little while.

Quiet.

Anyway, if you need anymore advice like Pickups (considering the body wood I'd use Di Marzio Activator X's when you feel like changing pickups) or Strings, I'm your man, maybe Scorp too.

Well, Ernie Ball is most popular but Dunlop make extremely good strings that I'd consider the best readily available.
Dunlop 1.1 picks are also good if you do any sort Metallica style thrash picking.

Try learning Bonded By Blood by Exodus. Not overly technical and its chorus is really catchy.
Agent Orange by Sodom is pretty easy too.

I spotted a set of Dunlop strings two days ago at a store. I was amazed. I had been looking for those strings for a few months already.
Sadly my dad bought me a set of HRS strings two weeks ago. I disliked their tone at first, but they're ok now.
Bad luck.
Dunlop strings are great, they react well with active pickups and don't have as much buzz as EBs.

One thing, if you have a guitar with EMGs, Dean Markley blue steel's make the tone hilariously dirty.

Your pickups are plain old Passives. There's nothing wrong with them though.

BTW, if you really do ever feel like changing pickups, Di Marzio Activator X's or Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortions will do you great; I'd recommend the latter particularly.

SH-6s kick EMGs ass (both EMG actives and Passives) and pwn Seymour Duncan Blackouts too.

That means they're good.

My Stratocaster is in Drop A with its bottom string, while my top string is tuned to like Eb and two strings below both tuned exactly the same, creating this funky Middle Eastern Sound; sounds really full too, due to the bottom string being so low.

I keep my Ibanez RG320PG in Standard though, because I play mostly thrash and it means I don't have to play around with the bridge all the time.
