Title: Hey I got a question for yall.
Post by: Badnik96 on September 30, 2014, 10:43:25 AM
I'm making a game for my game design class, and I was wondering:

If you knew a game was a blatant advertisement, what would get you to play it?

It's supposed to be a game advertising a fictional soda company.

What kind of advertisment are we talking here? Just a branded game or is there product placement all up in the gameplay?

Last kind of game that springs to mind here was a free Xbox Live game called Doritos Crash Course that came out a couple of years ago. Had bugger all to do with Doritos, except for the logo being plastered everywhere.

I wouldn't have even noticed it normally, but the game mechanics are based heavily on Total Wipeout, a tv show I really like.
Basically, if you want to make the game appealing but still keep the advertising mechanics, base it on an already popular formula that works, like a TV game show.

I don't care as long as it's a good game.  I guess I'd want some assurance that the gameplay is on par with normal games, and there aren't any in game commercials masquerading as unskippable cutscenes or long loading times.

I gues the short answer is, really sell the game mechanics, and people will want to play it.

Yeah I agree with sonny.

At least as the gameplay is good and interesting and that the game is fun, heavy advertising is odd but can be forgotten in case the gameplay is good.

If it is a forgettable game with heavy advertisment however it's a no.

3 steps:
-Make it so the gameplay and UI is as good as possible
-Make it so the advertisment isn't too obnoxious or goes in the way of the gameplay (like sonny said)
-You have a good game

While on the same boat as Sonny and Naryar, I'd also considering the audience you're trying to attract with your game and the environment they would most likely be. That way, you can get the people you want to buy the game and enjoy it. I'd also try and have people be attracted with how the features of the game. My example would be Sonic 1 for android and iOS. A feature that included was the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles in your game. That attracted me to buy it. However, it all depends on the genre of the game you are trying to sell. I hope I have helped.
