Title: GTM Awards 2016 - Discussion
Post by: cephalopod on November 28, 2016, 11:27:32 AM
Hey everyone!

Just thought I'd start the ball rolling with this one, deciding the changes to the awards for this year, as we usually do.

Last year's categories and winners (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=18554.0)

As last year, I'd personally like to condense the awards a little and also make them more positive instead of rewarding negativity.

That said, here's my current work in progress. Red awards are those we had last year but I propose we remove, and green are brand new awards. Very open to changing any of this. Voting will probably open mid December, DO NOT VOTE NOW.

What's wrong with Best New Tournament Host?

I'd keep the "Most likely to stay on-topic" Award.  I can see the reasoning why you'd remove it, but I feel it positively rewards those who contribute to the topic at hand.  Other than that, everything looks pretty good.

Also, I mentioned this in the Discord chat, but I feel I can get a clearer answer here: Would it be alright if I made badges/tags for each award?  For people to put in their signature or something like that?  I feel it can give some sort of flair and whatnot to these.  If you do want me to, then I'll give an example of what I'm talking about in a PM or however you prefer.  If not then it's fine.

favorite dsl, ironforge, and reetooled builder could all be compiled into favorite dsl-s builder imo, since none of metas have seen that much individual activity in 2016.

What's wrong with Best New Tournament Host?

I drafted this up a few months back when we'd had basically 0 new hosts. Maybe it's worth keeping it around now.

Can keep the award if people agree. Also badges/tags are cool, feel free to drop me whatever whenever

Now this is an idea I really like. Maybe replace stock with unrealistic too.

Agreed, just make the categories Favorite IRL builder, Favorite Standard Builder, and favorite Unrealistic builder. That's a better reflection of how the community is divided now.

Yeah, please keep it :P

I have previously read why you want to remove favourite GTM staff member but I think it's a nice and pretty funny custom, especially if you keep winning it ;)

I also agree with Geice and RedAce on their points.

A small suggestion - make 'Most Unique Bots' singular and have people vote for the most unique bot made this year.

And in addition to having 'Best Standard/Unrealistic/IRL Builder', have a bot version too?

Finally, perhaps the voting topic can be stuck on the front page temporarily replacing the GTM:C announcement, and we try to beat 17 people voting this year.

Play Ironforge. It's better for DSL-S anyways

There's gonna be alot of single votes if that's done. Hundreds of bots are made each year.

I think compiling a list of all the eligible BOTM entries/tournaments over the past year would help this. So people can look through it and see ones they may have otherwise forgotten.

Yeah I'd like to avoid categories likely to produce single votes. We usually have enough ties anyway.
I'll work up a list of botm bots if people want that to stay around.
My concern is, like usual, people will only vote for a few categories and leave categories like that with like 2 total votes.

It feels a little odd that we recognise the builder but not the bot. it comes off as "Well done, you're the best ___ builder, but eh, who cares what the actual bots were that made people make their decision." With that said, perhaps those two categories could end up making a "This is what people think was the coolest sh** this year" gallery?

Also as IRL building advances on us like the plague, how about having a best IRL tournament and a best proper non-IRL tournament?

I see nothing wrong with that, tbh. Seems needless to recognise every single bot that made you vote for them because it could be an entire showcase worth of stuff.

Replicas should be irl by nature as far as I'm concerned so can come under that.
Maybe best irl and non-irl tournament would be cool though, what do people think to that?

What's the major difference? IRL events have more show-y entries, but each one thrives off of good competitors and tight matches.

1. it'd give people who ran standard tournaments a chance to win an award even if not many people entered them
2. irl is all about the cool designs and production.

I think we should get rid of a lot of the awards that pretty much involve attacking someone like "most annoying" and such, seems out of spirit of the awards

other than that looks  :thumbup

All of the ones highlighted in red are the ones that Craaig is suggesting to get rid of. Pretty much all of the attacking ones are included in that.

Not me.

Neither of us had to worry about getting votes.

1. it'd give people who ran standard tournaments a chance to win an award even if not many people entered them
2. irl is all about the cool designs and production.

1. That is fair.
2. I guess those are larger priorities. A good gimmick and tight matches will still help.

That's something I'd like to hear feedback on. Don't really want to say 'they don't have to be completed' when I may be biased in that sense.

Maybe a tourney may be nominated if they have gotten through at least the first round.

Tbh, I think they do have to be finished. For example, although GTMRW has great production quality, I don't think it's so far into the tournament that it could be deemed the best tourney of 2016.

I think they should be completed before the awards start, and any tournaments that end after the time awards open would be eligible for next years awards.

+1

Giving the award to a tournament that hasn't been completed allows for the (very slim) possibility that the award might go to a tournament that is never completed.
