Of course you can drive it forward, normally. It's moving on Sideways in the vid because it looks so damn awesome. ;)

they're that bad?

I wouldn't say they are, but it's the truth. It's basically because there would be idiots get on them and try to go as fast as they could and then make a turn. They have a high center of gravity, so yo can imagine what happens at that point...
