I mean, how did you become a DJ? Given your age, you wouldn't even be allowed into a nightclub under most circumstances.

And if you think I have to be able to get into an Ectassy nightclub to be a DJ you need to read up on your hip-hop history.

It's not the compression's fault, if anything. Standard 128kbps, LAME-encoded.

Basically, distortion in music occurs when the tops and bottoms of the wavelengths are chopped off. This is how the music industry is accomplishing the loudness war.

Also known as clipping. Occurs when you feed sound that is too loud into a mixing device.

In case there's still confusion, listen to Nine Inch Nails. Just about everything Trent Reznor does is heavily distorted.

i wanna go ahead and say that's just a little bit different - he himself is an audio engineer iirc and would probably never release something where the tracks are clipping, it's audio 101

He definitely knows how to do it right, but everything is still heavily distorted.

Distortion is ok in moderation.  It can really give a track some kick, but if there's too much it just sounds awful.

I'm actually pretty good with mastering stuff.  I've had to wrestle with the loudness of alot of my songs.

Ok, when I first saw the title to the thread I thought of this:

But, all kidding aside.  I seriously think you should look into a mixing program called TechnoEjay.  I used to do mixes with that program on my old Windows XP machine back in the day (it was version 4 then).
There is a new version available for download here:

http://download.cnet.com/Techno-eJay/3000-2170_4-10891701.html#rateit (http://download.cnet.com/Techno-eJay/3000-2170_4-10891701.html#rateit)

I have not tried version 5 yet. But it has plenty of basic samples to use. The old version was very easy to use, I imagine the newer version might be just as easy to use.

While it is not a super-professional uber fancy program I think it is great for starters such as yourself.

So you did exactly two more things than I said? Two doesn't qualify as "lots".

Also, since when autotune is any good? It's one of the reasons why popular music sucks so much today.

It's Noooooooat autoOOOnnnne LiiikkkKKKEEE TttttPPAAWnnnnyyyeee does, it's just voacal tuning.
Which isn't needed. Minor imperfections give music character and emotion. If you auto-correct everything, it loses all feeling. This is the root of the problem with your mixes. Music is about expression. What exactly are you trying to get across?
Title: Re: DJ 5P4RK
Post by: Sparkey98 on July 29, 2010, 12:47:20 PM
No, all I autotuned was the voices to make them more  robotic.
Title: Re: DJ 5P4RK

No, all I autotuned was the voices to make them more  robotic.
But why? When I listen to your mixes, I don't get the sense that you're trying to express any sort of emotion or thoughts. It seems as though you're just combining things and applying different kinds of distortion.
Title: Re: DJ 5P4RK

It's called dance music.
Title: Re: DJ 5P4RK
Post by: frezal on July 29, 2010, 01:39:32 PM
It's called dance music.
But there is still emotional content in good dance music. While writing the songs, the musicians were expressing some sort of inner thoughts/feelings. Try mixing songs with similar or contrasting themes in order to make some sort of statement. If you mix at random, you're just creating noise that nobody can relate to.
Title: Re: DJ 5P4RK
Post by: G.K. on July 29, 2010, 04:26:05 PM
You need to set yourself a target. What do you want the music to achieve?

When I was composing for my music exam, I knew I had to make the features of the pieces (e.g. Ostinatos, variations etc in baroque) obvious and possibly exaggerated. But if you know what you're trying to do, you can focus on making good decisions, instead of adding random distortion and effects as a sort of 'I'm able to do this so I did' approach which I've heard from some of your things.

Title: Re: DJ 5P4RK
Post by: G.K. on July 29, 2010, 04:32:17 PM
You gotta be more specific than techno. Do you want it to be fast paced, or slow, for example?

Just look at FB's music in BBEANS. Much of that is techno, and look at the variation between Pillow Rocket Speed and Tranquillizer or Stompin'.

Once you know what exactly it is that you want, go out and foucs on bringing it to the forelight. Don't include every effect and distortion that you can, but do the ones that bring out the best in the music you try to create.

One tip is always have a constant background sound.
For example a drum steadily beating in the background all theway through it.

He wanted a fresh start, I assume he was allowed a name change to help with that in someway.

Technically that would be +2 :P

He wanted a fresh start, I assume he was allowed a name change to help with that in someway.

It is not going to help him.

He should just get out the forums, period. Every time he says "i'll act better" he doesn't.

He recently pulled off a LRA2 by trying to change username with SparktheFlame, obviously some intuitive people recognized him, and failed.

There. Doomed to fail. For now, I suggest he leaves and doesn't comes back till he stops spamming. Same for avalanche.

Hmm, perhaps, I suppose a lot of you will have put up with him for a lot longer than I have...
..Although, I don't think he did anything wrong under the spark the flame name, personally.

My opinion exactly.

Changing usernames doesn't do anything if you don't change your style.

I really feel like deleting both of his showcases so he will be so pissed he'll leave once and for all...
