BitDefender vs. Steam
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:22:46 AM »
Hey guys. As you might know I bought a new laptop. I downloaded steam and a trial version of Bitdefender. But it seems that BD causes all the hl2.exe games to crash after a short time playing and sometimes those games don`t even start. The only thing I get is the preparing to start yxz and after a short while this screen disapears and nothng happens. Taskmanager says that the game is running but it isn`t

I`m now thinking about changing to another internet security programm but I don`t want to use Kaspersky since I had a lot of problems with it in the past and also the latest one seems to be crap (from the things I read on different forums)

can anyone help me there?

Definitely a problem with BitDefender, as I see there's issues between it an Steam with people over the net. Only even relatively useful advice I can think of is get a better/different AV... Avast, anyone? XD

Disregard BD, use Steam and acquire TF2 for free.

Steam is still twitchy after all these years? Damn, Steam used to piss me off back in the day when I played CS.  I am baffled they haven't made it more stable.

I'm still a Kaspersky fan myself.  But Norton 360 has come a long way and runs pretty decent.  If you strive for free software... Avast isn't too bad (like Craaig suggested)  I had it on one of my computers for about 2 years, but then a virus squeaked by and I wasn't too impressed.  But, can't really beat it when it is free.

well I guess it`s more a problem with Bitdefender I guess. I`m now using Avira and Steam works without problems. Havn`t tried  Avast yet. But I have a grudge against Kaspersky. it used to block everything on my old laptop. I wasn`t even able to watch videos on youtube.

I don't use internet security.  I turn off all my firewalls and only have avast for weekly scans.  I think router/script block is enough to block off most things that I didn't stupidly download/install myself, and I don't expect a program to save me from those.

But then again, I don't use Steam either.  The concept of automated downloads bothers me to no end.
