Title: Computer Died
Post by: Sage on July 19, 2009, 11:43:40 AM
Yep my computer died. won't turn on. It's a Compaq Presario F700 Notebook, and when I hit the power button, the lights flash fo a second and then it shuts down. It's not the battery or the power supply.

Wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if they know how to fix it.

Could it be overheating? Is its restart button jammed? Just spouting out ideas...

I have never had that happen to me.

Try this: Unplug the Power supply and take the battery out. Let it sit for appx 30 seconds, this sometimes will clear out the RAM if there are any errors there preventing it from booting. Put the battery back in and plug in the power supply.  Try to turn it on from there and see if it boots.

If it gives you the same problem, and you are 100 percent sure the power supply is not cooked, your motherboard is probably got an issue.

If you are 100% positive it's not the battery or PSU...

Did the laptop suffer wear and tear? If so, a trace might have broken on the motheboard, and then you're ****ed, unless you have LAZ0R EYES, a soldering iron and very steady hands. You may try disassembling the laptop, then clear the CMOS (BIOS settings) by taking out the little li-on button cell battery and/or shorting a jumer which is probably marked "CLR CMOS" or something.

Good luck, laptop deaths suck.

You know, he can always take out the hard drive and connect it to his PC via an IDE cable with a special (and cheap) adapter.

Compared to LRA2 I'm about to offer Hydro a bird sacrifice. He should stay to fill up the "noob" slot with someone at least somewhat friendly.

Hey sage, I just got a notice at work from HP indicating a massive motherboard problem spanning nearly 100 different models of HP/Compaq laptops.  I couldn't remember the model number of your computer so i couldn't see if it was on the list. The nice perk is that if your model is on the list, HP has extended the warranty of the effected machines to 2 years instead of the traditional 1.  I will check on it when I get to work on Monday. Just be sure to keep that in mind if it turns out the Motherboard is toast.

Based on the symptoms and what I guess is a laptop with a nVidia chipset. You are yet another victim of bad bumps. Only hope would be to whine at HP until they fix it for you. Have a look at HPLies.com.

Sorry for the delay, i brought the list home with me.  But it only lists the effected machines by the product number and not the model number.  what is your computer's product number?  it should be on the label on the bottom of the machine.  something like p/n "something something"

Linky for better explaination (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00033108&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3636382)
