A little project I was doing. RA2L is the standard RA2 V1.4 game, but everything that is not of use to the game has been removed. Future additions, such as compression and smaller .bmps for components will be added after I see what you think of this. The idea behind this is that because it's a smaller file, the game'll have less to load, thus causing less lag. A DSL version might be made, but I'd probably remove all the replicas because I'm not bothering to resize every component in DSL (You seen how many there are?) So, yeah. Tell me what you think of this, then I'll upgrade it along the way.
Note; 87MB of stuff has been shaved off of this so far.
V1:https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/5070Robot Arena 2 Lite.zip (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/5070Robot Arena 2 Lite.zip)
V2:https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/Robot Arena 2 Lite V2.zip (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/Robot Arena 2 Lite V2.zip)
V3: (COMING TOMMOROW)
Stuff Improved so far;
Pointless Files Removed (DirectX install, Gamespy, Game Registration...)
Pointless Components Removed (Hovercraft, Magnet, Flamethrower, Cannon)
Pointless Arenas Removed (FlexTop and Half Circle)
BBEANS Arena added
Arena Textures Smallened
To do;
Compress Files
Smallen component files
Smallen UI files

Nice idea. I used to use a similar game on my old computer due to lag.
-
I definitely could of used something like this a long time ago.. I deinstalled Ra2 some time ago from my PC to free up space on it, and been somewhat missing it ever since. I seemingly 'misplaced' my Ra2 disc so I can't re-install it either.
I don't think a light version of DSL should be made though, it just seems wrong since DSL is a mod and not a complete game in of itself. But that's my own personal thought, and I've come to learn that no-one cares what I think anymore. <.<

*Puts hand up*
I do.
Oh, by the way, thanks for all the :thumbup and all, made me smile for the first time in about 2 weeks.
Expect an upgraded version, with simplified .BMP's in order to reduce battle lag, soon.
(NOTE TO SELF; DO NOT EDIT THE MOTOR'S .BMP'S. I dunno why, but they really hate to be edited with.)
Question: Should I simplify the arena's .BMP's as well, to reduce battle lag further?

To be honest, I think that you could delete 1/2 of the arenas and replace them with custom arenas that lag less and get away with it for the better.
I'm talking no more...
Metal Skull (Stupid)
Compressor (Buggy Hazards)
Half Circle (Worthless)
Bridge of Doom (The Bridge isn't doomful enough)
Lumazone (RedlineM's is better)
Flextop (All luck)

The thing is, the competitions in-game use them. Therefore, I wouldn't be able to get rid of them without doing some .txt editing, which would probably wind up with me having to do some .exe editing, which we can't do. We're better off just sticking with what we can actually do rather than trying and failing.

Nope. No .exe editing required. Just edit events.txt.

Oh. Ok then. I'll remove the Flextop, and might remove the Half Circle and Bridge Of Doom, and replace them with the BBEANS arena.

Oh, of course, I can't put BBEANS in without it crashing...

Yep. Got it to work.

How about doing a list of what stuff you've optimized? You may need some help on the other stuff.

Well, Ok then.
That's now at the first post. Could ya thumbs up me bro? I know it seems like I'm whoring out here, but it's really quite hard work. I see now why DSL3's taking so long.
Also, Sys32 called you a B**ch on Steam.

DP
RA2L V2 is on the first page now.
-
This is a really good idea actually. Some components can be argued to beused sometimes though. Bracket wedges, E-Wedges, Battle Axes, but some like Forklift arms could go.
You should leave ballasts in though. :trollface
-

Not at all.
-
When I was making mine I dropped all the arena's except..
Combat Zone
Lumazone (for the purpose of KOTH ability)
Claw Top (for the purpose of Tabletop ability)
And added in all the Low Lag arena's
-
Now from my point of view I actually like fighting in the Half Circle Arena so I think you should remove the lumazone instead.
-
Then we port it to a PSP.........
Oh god I wonder if this is possible.
-

The Half Circle is one of the most lag filled stock areas due to hazard content..
Not good for a mod based around online play

Oh this is based around online play I did not know but I still think it is one of best arenas in the standard game.
-
I think this could be good. Especially with half of the arenas being completely useless.
For example:
Metal Skull: "I am a giant skull, now for the next 3 minutes, I'm going to stare at you!"
Compressor: Ramps get in the way, and if you get stuck in the whatever they're called, you're f***ed.
Half-Circle: Navigating is near impossible(for me anyway).
Flex-Top: Bot moves 1 inch = 8.8 earthquake
Lumazone: Sit in square with a 36HS and you win.
Hill arena: Same as above(if you can get there)
Bridge of Doom: A real bridge of doom would would have a 400 ft pit beneath it and if you fall, you'll die and your body will be violently raped by a penguin.
-
Lumazone: Sit in square with a 36HS and you win.
Hill arena: Same as above(if you can get there)
One of these needs to stay though.. otherwise it makes the KOTH game mode unusable
The Lumazone at least you dont spend most of the match trying to recover from falling off the ramps..

Link me to all these 'low-lag' arenas, if you please.
Also, @Click HOW BLOODY BIG DID YOU NEED TO MAKE THE SKINS FOR THE BBEANS ARENA!?

Actually, I've decided; I'm not going to remove or add any more arenas than I already have done. You see, it's a case of like-dislike here; The arenas I removed were ones that EVERYBODY disliked and the ones I added were ones EVERYBODY liked. All the others might not be the best of arenas, but they contribute to the RA2 experience.
In short, if you don't like it, remove it yourself.
Poll added on the first page anyway.
Oh, and BTW, we've reached the halfway mark; the game is now smaller than 100MB.
-
I stripped ra2 down to almost nothing back on my old desktop. A few more things you could do that I did (although i dont know if you wanna go this extreme with it) Delete the texture library folder and any file in the main folder that isn't necessary to run the game in the botlab and combat zone.
I would also keep the robot designs and screenshots folder in another folder on my destop to get ra2 as streamlined as possible.
-
The average HDD is now 590GB in capacity (http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seagate-hdd-gigabyte-terabyte-quarter-result,13118.html)

I voted Lumazone and Bridge of Doom.
And with these space changes...you could probably get this to run on a 95 by the time we're finished :P

Awesome.now I have my own mod like copy.
-
I have been working on a mod kind of similar to this.

Well I beat ya to it. *Wiggles finger like Sonic The Hedgehog*
-
And I beat you.. :gawe:
It just when you asked me for help I abandoned mine to lift my work load since the community was going to get the project regardless.
-
And I beat you.. :gawe:
It's like some kind of impromptu food chain
-
Anyway, Important update; I'm planning to have this, which is the entire RA2 experience but on a smaller scale, and RA2 Core, where EVERYTHING that is not needed is removed. The only arenas are the Low Lag Arena, Lumazone and ClawTop (Or low lag varieties), and all texture would be removed.
-
please dont leave them as white textureless objects.. you will kill this idea off in seconds like that..

Hmm. Ok then.
-
Drop them to 16x16 solid colours if you have to.. they will only be bytes in size..

So no other arenas, I was just getting interested :vista:
-
add them in yourself then.. its not hard..
You cant seriously judge a whole mod based on one arena not present

It's ok RPJK, I've decided against it.
So, everyone's cool with me removing Bridge Of Doom, Hill Top and Compressor?

In order to contribute and not just slow this down, i'm working on resizing the .bmp and .tga files in the Components folder to cut down sizes there.

Thanks DSC. Send them over when you're done.

Download, extract and overwrite files.Broken, check page 4.
Knocked them down to 16x16, both bmp and tga files. Shrunk the total size by about half.

Small problem; you've done it with the DSL components. Also, don't alter the skins of the motors; it crashes the game.
-
My apologies. However, I guess if you ever decide to do a DSL Lite... :p
On the motors thing though, that may just be RA2-specific. Testing in DSL, exhibition matches with both AI bots and my own, i've not come had any crashes.

You never know, I might do a DSL Lite. Neways, it does seem to be an RA2 specific thing. I thought I'd compressed something wrong when I first ran into it.
Some thumb this guy up for helping me on this. Your name'll be in the credits, mah friend ;)

Here's the Readme for RA2L.
Hey there, how are you doing? This is Robot Arena 2 Lite, a fanmade hack by FOTEPX of Gametechmods. If you have found this hack on anywhere else
other than FOTEPX's signature or the Robot Arena 2 Lite thread, please contact me on Bamzookiman130@googlemail.com, and tell me where you found it.
Thank you.
Robot Arena 2 Lite is a hack of Robot Arena 2. The purpose of Robot Arena 2 Lite is to remove anything that will not be nessescary to the game,
therefore hopefully removing lag and other game-based issues. All textures in the game have been simplified, and some arenas have been removed.
Also, since everything pointless has been removed and everything with a point has been compressed, we've managed to cut down the original game
from 300MB to a staggering 78MB. This means that this version of the game is not only faster downloading, but easier to add things to since it's
so stripped down.
Kudos goes out to;
FOTEPX (Made It)
JoeBlo (Helped with Ideas)
Dragonsteincole (Simplyfied some textures)
All of Gametechmods (For providing support whilst making the hack and just being a blast to be around in general (Yes, even the ponyfags))
YOU! (For downloading it)
Thanks very much for reading and have fun kicking some robot butt!
Yours,
FOTEPX.

RA2 Lite textures. Download, extract and overwrite files. Simples. (http://www.mediafire.com/?829ric7k3j30xrw)
Done for RA2, motors tested, no errors. I think your issue with the motors was however you were editing them was changing properties other than the size (i.e changing palette/colours used.).
And just realised a 'big' error with the DSL ones... mainly, another .rar inside with the backup of the components folder. Whoops. :rage

You edited the motor's skins...
So it don't work in stock. I appreciate you trying, but just leave the motor skins alone, thanks.
-
Yes I edited the motor's skins, after I tested them in Stock to see if I could replicate these crashes. I did 3 matches in Stock with AI bots and my own bots, which have motors visible, and I had 0 crashes. If someone else could test these in their game and report back it'd help, but right now I can't replicate these crashes you're having.

No, go into making a new bot, and click on the Mechanics tab. That's what buggers it.

Still working. I'm not trying to annoy you, I genuinely cannot make RA2 crash with these textures ;)
