Title: Online Arena
Post by: Trovaner on September 07, 2010, 11:16:58 PM
Made this between some of my other mods...
The walls are low enough that spinners don't get disrupted when they get too close and they are raised high enough that wedged bots don't get stuck (or flip themselves out of the arena by hitting a wall).

It gets 31% more FPS than the Low Lag Arena, 32% more FPS than the Low Lag 2 Arena, and 30% more FPS than the Infinity Arena. The baseline was an average of 651 FPS when using Dense2 in both slots. Anyways, heres the link (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/9757OnlineArena.rar).

Comments/criticism/suggestions....

Colors defined in the GMF in hexadecimal, maybe ?

O wait. You are being sarcastic :P

The only thing I don't like is that I went to switch to Watch camera view and Enfilad3 was suddenly eliminated.  :rage

And if the AI bot falls off, it doesn't count him eliminated.  :rage :rage

interesting allowing input in such a way

so you toss a robot oota then hit F4 to eliminate it ?

this spawns many ideas for arenas in my head...

The F4 camera was changed so that it ended the game. That way, it didn't have to keep checking to see if a bot had fallen out of the arena (unnecessary lag).

After pressing F4, it goes through these steps until there is only one bot:
1. Eliminate bot that has fallen out of the arena (furthest one down gets eliminated)
2. Eliminate bot that has the lowest chassis health (0-1 value for both bots)
3. Eliminate bot in slot one as a last resort

If you really want to use the F4 camera (both the F2 and F4 cameras add to the lag), you can set watch camera as the default in RA2's settings.

Edit: I think JoeBlo's above post was in response to this one

Should be called Death Switch Arena

651 FPS

You really pulled out all the stops to reduce lag... high tick interval, low polys, even hiding components on bots.  Now all that's left is to actually try it online.

There's a lot of cool Python tricks in here that I didn't know about.  *Gets an idea for a stealth AI that turns itself invisible.*  And I'm sure you could use that def NextWatchCamera for a lot of cool stuff.  Also, self.ClearCameraBlockers() will be very helpful for filming matches with Orbit cam.

And the first bot to use it should be named Waldo. :O

WIN

And the F4 thing could be abused... "hehehe I'll press F4 until the other bot is out!" *assuming your bot is in slot 2*

Yeah, the arena has a lot more programming than you would expect. I've got loads of codes that I've been trying to find uses for. This is not the first arena that I've made with keyboard (re-programmed camera buttons) but it is definitely the simplest.

I used an earlier version of this arena online with Sage but RA2 was still limited by our connection.

Edit:
And the F4 thing could be abused...
Thats why I'm eliminating them rather than destroying them.

I've made several bots completely invisible but the AI bots aren't confused unless you mess with their targeting.

Exactly... which is why it could be tournament-legal.  :gawe:

Or more likely, you could make a stealth team in an AI pack or something.

Hmm... maybe I should submit a team to NAR AI.

I was actually going to do a tournament (I still have allt he splashes, etc somewhere) which was making all the robots invisible so you didnt know what you were fighting then the loosing robot would be revealed but I figured matches would be boring so I didnt progress much further..

That actually sounds like a cool idea, if you could somehow ensure that matches would be fast.  Like do it in an arena with lots of hazards, or limit it to 1 minute.  It would be fun trying to guess what the bots that were doing really well looked like.

well I might put it up in discussion and see how it goes... the worst that could happen is it isnt voted in.

now to find all the splashes, etc I made for it  :gawe:

Am I the only one who thinks FPS has nothing to do with RA2 network lag?

I mean, I easily get around 1000 FPS on all arenas, yet when I host a game it still lags to heck and back.

I did think that..

but the arena will defiantly make a load up time difference which can help the online game speed

also the low lag ness can be very useful for UHW robots  ;)
