More freedom to shape chassis?
« on: March 26, 2009, 03:33:51 PM »
Is there a way that I can modify my game so that when I'm designing my bot's chassis, I never get the message "Can't move that point because it will ben one side too much"  I can't for the life of me understand why they'd care if you bent one side too much.

Has anyone here ever made a patch for the game that gets rid of the "bend one side too much" restriction?

That's probably hardcoded in the EXE. And I hear the hardcoded stuff in EXEs are guarded by dragons and stuff.

Basically, it's unlikely we'd be able to touch it. Without the source.

Uncheck "Snap to Grid" and make the chassis as tall as possible and it will let you do things a little better, then bring the chassis height back down when finished.

It IS in the 'untouchable' region, where psychopaths and other pill popping psychiatrists lurk....

ACAMS has the best idea....

If it's a special non-competition bot, you can do allot in the........bot file:shock:. I have some freaky shaped bots, pyramid bots, star bots, invisible chassis bots, and Goose has a real cool donut-shaped bot with a hole in the middle. CB also just modded a bot for DSL3 in the bot file,... so there are many options in editing it.

That error message is in the game for a reason, believe it or not.  I've made bots with a chassis that violates that rule and it can crash the game.  You have to be careful bypassing the chassis limitations.

That said, here's a way to bypass some of those restrictions without editing the .bot file.  First, check the "Rectangle" option.  Then clear the grid.  Then draw a new chassis.  Then, move the "Height" and "Width" sliders.  You'll be able to move the first four points you place anywhere you want.

Something else I've wondered: Is there a way to "collapse" points into one another when shaping the top panel?  I ask because I want to be able to make wedge-shaped bots that go all the way up without that unattractive rectangular bit at the top.

I'm glad someone remembers the Trovaner Chassis Glitch (aka Trov Glitch) :D

Currently, the only other way besides .bot file editing is to make your bot so that it falls onto its side at the beginning of the match but this method usually causes problems with turning.

Yea, Trov. Sorry I didn't remember your cool find. Was that on the old forum?

Very true on the side steering.

Bot file editting is the surefire way for getting things where you want them.
