Title: In need of an arena.
Post by: ianh05 on July 20, 2010, 02:51:33 AM
hey guys, with all the new tournaments running I decided that my Robo Zone tournament needs the finals arena to stand out.

500th post so I'm requesting something :P

I have posted the idea before and Mad was going to make it for me but he was busy with tournaments etc. I have stared at the BBEANS arena for hours and still can't figure out if i could somehow mod the combat zone arena to have 2 caged of areas that lower after a certain amount of time or if i would have to do something else also  :ouch:

here's the basic idea of what i need:

- Combat zone sized arena.
- Caged off areas big enough for the bots inside to not be immobilized.
- Able to View the bots in the cages.
- The cage holding bot number 3 comes down after 30 seconds.
- The cage holding bot number 4 comes down after 1 minute.
- No hazards (except the cages which function like a hazard).
- Robots only go for robots if they are outside the cages.

this would not only make a great tournament arena but would be fun for everyone in exhibition. If anyone watches WWE then you know the basic idea of what I'm after already :)

Madiaba may be in progress on if IIRC but stopped after you left us for a bit

he mentioned some of the work to me also, I would help out but I already have a ton of other things to make :/

yeah it sucks we don't have many people who know how to mod arenas, I'm trying to learn how to mod them I'm not sure how much i can do by editing the .py file though.

Daleksec7 might be able to help...

I could probably tinker about with something. Don't expect any results though. Would you be after any other hazards?
Title: Re: In need of an arena.
Post by: ianh05 on July 20, 2010, 01:47:52 PM
nope, no other hazards just the caged off areas.. no one uses hazards in serious tournaments anyway :)

just note that Mad has mentioned that he has already started on the arena, I wouldn't like his efforts to be put to waste.

Oh, ok.

I will have a chat to Mad about where he is with it and help him finish it off :)

if its long gone or not started I could do it but we will "play it by ear" and see how loaded I am with other stuff (currently I am making 2 other arenas for people)

If needed, I have some old coding that could be recycled for the Arena.py (I would just need to add some coding so that the AI doesn't attack the cages).  The Arena.gmf wouldn't be too difficult to do (although, Joe would probably do a better job at skinning it than me).

Unfortunately, I'm also in the middle of a couple arenas but it wouldn't take too long to do this one...

well what about if we worked on it together ? (or group work with Mad if he started it) Mad spoke about a similar project too....

if we complete it as a group its less of a work load for all of us.

Working together on it would be fine with me (more the merrier) but I think we should wait for permission from Mad. I remember him talking about this arena when he began working on it but I have no idea how far he got...

Bad idea for spinners or SnS or maybe even rammers because they will hit the cage and damage all of their weapons. Then its easier to defeat once the bot gets into the fight because (In the case of an SnS like SnSnSnSnS) half of its weapons are gone already. Unless this can be overridden...

Post by: JoeBlo on July 21, 2010, 10:15:34 PM
you could just not enter an SnS ? :P

or the cages materiel could be set as rubber which components wont damage on

any update on this arena? RZ2 is getting closer. The cage material should cause no damage so if rubber does that then the caged off area walls should be rubber :)

please donate more hours to my day  :gawe:

Gigafrost is first priority since his tournament has progressed.. I just need the time to complete it

then I can start this stuff, I think I know how to do the whole thing with coding Madiaba has given me but Trov could probably handle that stuff a lot better then me, when I get the time to sculpt it I will.

(did I owe someone else an arena ? I cannot recall anymore :P)

plus I have my own projects I wish to do

I made your arena, you lost it

your not allowed to host anymore tournaments so there is no need to send, you can wait for Backlash  :gawe:

I've been done with the Arena.py for quite awhile (it just needs a few touch ups after the Arena.gmf is made). The only reason why I haven't said anything is because I'm still waiting for Mad to give me the go-ahead (although, Joe might have gotten it...).

Features of my Arena.py:
I'm still in favor of turning this into a group project but if it makes things easier for everyone else, I could start on the Arena.gmf and skinning...

I can make a pretty pretty model in 3dsmax.

yes we need to chat with Mad

I can make a pretty pretty skin for the end result :P

Sorry for the hold up guys... I've been out of commission for a bit while moving (still tech-crippled a bit).
I don't have access to my A2 work at all, so you guys go for it as you see fit.

Serge, A 3dsMaxed arena?......that's real nice of you.  Cool.

Why don't one/some of you guys take over this project and I'll just help out as we get into it... whatever path we take here.

bit of a bump, wondering how the progress on this arena is going :)

came to a pretty quick halt when you and Madiaba both left..

Havent heard anything about it since nor done anything myself.

yeah i figured that leaving the forum for a bit would have that effect i still think it would be a great arena for anyone to use, not just for me to use in robo zone especially if there has been work done on it as mentioned here:

I've been done with the Arena.py for quite awhile (it just needs a few touch ups after the Arena.gmf is made). The only reason why I haven't said anything is because I'm still waiting for Mad to give me the go-ahead (although, Joe might have gotten it...).

Features of my Arena.py:
  • AI won't attack caged bots
  • Caged bots won't move unless they are being counted out (if you would like, I could also stop them from rotating their weapons)
  • If there is only 1 non-caged bot, the next available caged bot is released without a delay.
  • As time progresses, the cages are consecutively opened (30sec and 1min after the fight begins)
I'm still in favor of turning this into a group project but if it makes things easier for everyone else, I could start on the Arena.gmf and skinning...

As I mentioned in my above post Madiaba wanted a hand in building it but he has/ had a lot of other stuff going on outside this forum thats kept him away from RA2.

I pretty much left it and went on to building my own arena's

I made an Arena.gmf for this but it was never finished because I didn't want to step on anyone's toes. I just need to add the cages and do a few touch ups here and there. It also has a problem which I plan to ask Mad about. If Joe wants to work on the skin, I wouldn't mind sending it to him (after everything else is done).

Go for it, guys.  Sorry to be a hindrance for any such work as this.  As I mentioned before, one of you guys should step in and head/co-head this.  I'll serve you guys as a TA, which I doubt you guys would need anyway.
The idea is good, IMHO.

However I can help let me know, but this doesn't look too involved.

Nice to see you around again Mad.. your presence is missed around here.. I have had to fend for myself in those big scary GMF files :P

Sounds like Trov has it pretty much wrapped up himself.. I will be happy to help out in the skinning department though...

1 and a half year bump, sorry but can I have a progress report? I know it's been ages but I have no idea how long these things take, shouldn't take this long though :)

I haven't touched RA2 in ages so I can't remember if I made much more progress on it. I'll see about blowing the dust off of RA2 tomorrow and try to come up with a time frame.

I took a look and it appears as though I still have a problem with overlapping transparencies. As far as time goes, I could get it done within a week (assuming that the problem can be resolved). There might also be an issue with the cages jamming but I couldn't spend much time testing this.

Does JoeBlo still want to skin it?
Title: Re: In need of an arena.

Can skinning it be done in paint like a normal arena skin edit? If so, I could skin it myself. When you're done could you PM it to me instead of posting it please? I intend for it to be a reward for my next tournament.

I don't mind holding off on the submitting to the public but I don't think ms paint supports transparency. I have a rough skin that uses TGA files for the inner walls, cages, and audience. If you would like me to skin it, it will take an additional week (I'm trying to fit this into my busy schedule).

Unfortunately, I've been much busier than expected over the last couple weeks so this arena isn't quite ready yet. I will however continue working on it and get it shipped out ASAP.

That's ok, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait and can't wait to show it off in my next tournament :)
