I have been making a few custom component skins just for fun and kind of wondered what you would guys think of them.

looking quite good... simple and clean.

my only question is (and I ask everyone this) have your thought about proper GMF editing the components so you can have multiple skins in the one game ?

You can also make a txt file that will make a new component but just a duplicate of that so you dont have to loose the skin before that.

you cant make copies of components without GMF editing .... the game will get confused with multiple BMP's with the same name

only reason I always bring it up is its not only useful but quite a fun skill to have and its so easy using the tutorial on the beetle bros site

Use styles instead like what Sage did to his skin pack.

if im not mistaken it would still require GMF editing otherwise say if you clicked the standard supervolt first then all styles will appear that way until you close the game

Its actually more involved than you might think.

First, you make a new skin. Next, you make a copy of the GMF of the component, decompile it, and change name of the .bmp in there to the name of the new .bmp you made. Now one would have to make a copy of the components's .txt file and change the name and GMF that the .txt uses. Rename that .txt and put it in the styles folder. Lastly, in the original .txt, instead of having the line say "Styles = Default" change it to "Styles = Normal, newskin.txt, New Skin."

I'll make a in depth tutorial with pictures later.

I am doing these in a different copy of stock than I build in, so at this point, I'm not worried about having the originals still in the game.

Edit:

I have made a skin for the Nifty 6v battery.

I replaced the original .bmp with the new skin .bmp which had the same file name, but it doesn't show up in the game for some reason.

doesn't show as it the components is white ? or doesn't show up in the game at all ?

for the former

might have something to do with some programs will save files as .bmp while others .BMP while this doesn't effect programs it may effect the game also the bitmap might be different (does RA2 use 24 bit ?)

Yea you have to save it as a 24 bit instead of 32.

I mean the component is there, but it's still the original skin.
