I don't know if this has been done before or if its any help to anybody, but I figured I'd post it anyway just in case it is helpful.
So I've done a little fiddling around in RA2 for the past half hour, and what I've been trying to do is make it so the translation from the blueprint grid to the baseplate grid easier. Since I can't resize either of them, I came up with a different way of doing it.
What I did was overlay the baseplate grid onto the blueprint grid so that you can get an idea of what size the chassis will be in terms of baseplate grid units. This is helpful if you want to build robots by putting all the parts in a full sized chassis, measuring up the grid-lines, and rebuilding the chassis to be airtight.
The translation from the grid on the blueprint to the real one isn't perfect, but it's very close.
For instance, here I wanted to make a chassis 4x4 baseplate units:

Here's what it turned out to be:
Those with a sharp eye could probably tell its off by about a pixel, but I still think it's a very useful resource.
Download for great justice!
I have grids made for 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200.
Edit: New version get!
It's pretty much the same thing, except I added handy-dandy little numbers for you to use. Again, something simple that helps a heck of a lot.

Here's a link to the newest version:
http://noodle.q3k.org/files/grids2.rar (http://noodle.q3k.org/files/grids2.rar)
Also here is a database of all the different components sizes relative to the baseplate and chassis grids:
http://noodle.q3k.org/gridtable/index.html (http://noodle.q3k.org/gridtable/index.html)
Anyway, if anyone wants me to add more resolutions, just tell me.

Now that would be use full for very picky bots builders.
-
Brilliant idea.
-
This is the best idea I've seen in a while! :D
-
Download please :D
-
Update - a download is now available at the bottom of the first post.
-
It's cool.
It definitely should be pixel-precise though :rage
-
Very useful feature. Nice work. =) *approves*

Will there be awards for everything at the end of the year, like: best tourney, best tourney host, best robot build and best innovation and stuff like that? cause this seems to be a pretty awesome one to me.
-
damn why couldnt you have come here 1 year and a half sooner :P I had to learn to adapt to the transition between the 2
-
Thanks alot guys! I'm glad you like it. :D

I think the download versions are better than the one in the pictures as far as accuracy. Still I'm not sure if there is any way for it to be 100% perfect.
-
Very nice, Noodle! Can't wait to use it!
-
This could be even better than my other custom blueprint grid. All it needs are more subdivisions in the boxes. Fortunately, these are easily added.
-
Quick! Someone make a database of the measurements of each component!!
-
With this and sages idea, If some one were to also put the measure meant into the component description then we might start get very space efficient bots.

I don't really think that's necessary, since you can still make bots space-efficient through trial and error. XD
-
I mean I't won't take as long and take so much time to do that.
-
Nice thought, Noodle.
(I'll try it out when I'm able...)
-
Well I've spent my entire day crunching numbers and typing up HTML code manually, and the result was this:
http://noodle.q3k.org/gridtable/ (http://noodle.q3k.org/gridtable/)
For those who don't want to click on the link, its a table that shows each chassis-mountable component's size in terms of chassis and baseplate grid units.
-
That goes straight into my favorites. That will be very useful. Thanks Noodlez!

Glad I could help guys. :)
I also just realized that I excluded pistons for whatever reason, so I'm gonna go fix that as soon as I can get to it.

Your "Chassis Length x Width" values don't match up with my personal size chart.
Examples
You have the Control Board labeled as: 1.771 x 1.714
I have it labeled as: 1.706 x 1.765
You have the Z-TEK labeled as: 2.857 x 1.714
I have it labeled as: 1.706 x 2.824
Obviously, our widths and lengths are swapped due to the orientation of the chassis/component but the values still don't add up. Back when I made my chart, I double checked all my values so I'm positive the components fit into chassis of the sizes that I have written down. Your values seem to be bigger than necessary. I converted mine out of pixels so that they would be in the same units as yours. When I converted your values back to pixels, it turned out that it wasn't such a big deal because at most you were off by two pixels.
-
Yeah, they aren't perfect. I tried to get them as close as possible, but I was eyeballing it. Knowing I'd make mistakes I tended to try and estimate towards being bigger so that I wouldn't end up underestimating. Even the ratio I used to convert from baseplate grid units to chassis grid units (4:7) isn't perfectly accurate.
Still, it's purpose is to try and remove most of the semi-fine guess work involved with components, and I think it has succeeded in that sense. Most people aren't even going to look at the hundredths place much when building a chassis.

THERE IS A GOD :O

Bump with a small, yet helpful, update. Check the first post.
Since I'm suffering massive builder's block I figured I'd try and get something accomplished.

Blame sparkey.

I'm so horrible

The updated link on your first post says grids2.rar, but it linked to grids.rar. I fixed it so it links to grids2.rar.
What exactly did you update, aside from putting Xzibit in there? More accuracy?

Well for one I added the numbers. I also tried making them more accurate than before but I don't think it made much of a difference, if any.
Also, I decided I'd bump so I could make a mod for anyone with a resolution I didn't support in the main download and because I'm looking for some feedback if possible.
-
Nice work!
-
Please could you do one for 1440x900?
-
Couldn't you just make a resolution independent version? It would just take a bunch of [Line] codes inside of the GIB. Doing it that way would make it automatically change sizes for you. At least, thats what I did for the height guide in my sig.

BUMP
Can someone ask Noodle for the DL link or something?

I was in need of this too, but does anyone have the update listed in the first post?
-
It didn't work for me. How do I add it it? I replaced the blueprint files and just got a blank white one.

Replace blueprint.bmp with the one the one that fits your screen resolution.
I'm not sure what blueprint2.bmp does but don't change it.

Working "download" and "components sizes tab" links?
