AI Packs for the Stock Bots?
« on: May 25, 2010, 05:26:47 AM »
Hi Everyone, great to find such an active community of RA2 players here.  I bought the game back in 05, and hadn't played in years, but dusted it off this week and found the amazing range of mods available.

Anyhow, I like to start slow on the mods, so I'm wondering if anyone has tried a AI improvement pack for the stock bots?  I'm finding it a bit hard to find a simple summary of exactly what each mod and expansion packs is supposed to do, so if such a thing exists I'd appreciate a pointer.

Most people would say to get starcore 1, but if I recall rfs ai has a lower level than that and would be a better place to go. Correct me if I'm wrong guys xD

RFS is roughly the same difficulty level as Stock AI

Starcore 1 is a step up to something harder

Perhaps I am not using the right terminology.

Is it possible to improve the AI scripting for the robots and teams that ship with the game?  If so that was what I was looking for.  I quite like simple robots and am not a huge fan of massed banks of weapons as I think they unrealistically multiply damage.

Anyhow, thanks for the recommendation of Starcore 1, I've loaded it up and that is sure giving a harder AI challenge.  In fact it is kicking the butt of the simple designs I build to fight the vanilla Bot designs.

BBEANS 6 - Infection 4 (Runner-Up)
RA2 Team Championships - Serious Business, Skeksis (Runner-Up, along with Scrappy, S_M, and Badnik)
RA2 Team Championships 2 - The Other Stig (Runner-Up, along with Scrappy, S_M, Badnik, 090901, and R1885)

ah I see... our users on here including myself have written many more advanced codes for robot actions.. none which will however increase the difficulty of the stock robots very much.. they are very poor and if the games wasnt so open I suspect it would have failed

RFS for stock is basically realistic stock robots that maybe will be a touch harder then default ones plus greater in amounts (more teams)

progression through Starcore is the way to go if your after difficulty.. the only thing is you will find realism of robot designs out the window.. this will happen for most stock robot arena 2 games and patches..

for true realism conversion to DSL 2.1 will provide replica parts from real life.. realism building, etc but it does also step up in difficulty.

RFS AI is really fail when you consider the difficulty of the bots.

Well, I consider alot of bots in DSL
massed banks of weapons
Since, They are in theory realistic, But in pratice theyre just not :P

Its like Powergaming, Not exactly breaking the rule... But totally crushing the "Spirit" of it

(And as Ive seen in the Backslash Showcase, It isnt gonna be much different than in DSL... People will still make those kinds of bots :P)

little faith in Joe does young LiNcK, underestimate how big the plans are to change you do.

The Beta you see in the showcase currently piggybacks of DSL a bit.. but its waaaay to early to make those type of judgments (also after I showed you all the cool new stuff) the aim is no DSL parts in Backlash at all by the final beta.

What I mean with "It isnt gonna be much deffirent than DSL" is that people would still build those kinds of bots taht are built in DSL :P
"Half realistic" ones... Its unstoppable ;O

Hoolaman: Give up.

You're joining a forum which has hit its peak, and the only way to keep things fresh is by constantly adding/removing restrictions/parts/rules/styles of play.

The only way for me to explain is that your playing a game on an arcade, and all the scores in the top ten are 99999999999999999999999999999999999999. you'll never win, so please... save yourself some serious hurt from the guys here and quit while you can. just do it. I beg you.
Put this onto your signature if you were part of this crappy fad in '03.
