The Ironforge Showcase of the Snow Leopard, to Learn (Again)
« on: November 20, 2014, 02:53:04 PM »
Hello everyone.

So, yeah, I have returned, which I've considered doing for some time now.  I originally left because, to be blunt, I felt the state of the forum had really gone downhill, and between that and the stuff in real life I've had/still have to deal with, I didn't think it was worth sticking around here.  Because I'm still a bit busy with real life stuff, I can't help but feel I did this too early, but the optimistic part of me says that the forum has had enough time to get better and things in my personal life are getting better as well.  And so I'm here.

As far as what I've been doing RA2-wise, I haven't built many standard Stock and DSL bots.  Instead, I've been focusing on learning how to build good IRL bots, not only in DSL2 but in DSL3b and Ironforge as well (OK so I did drop by a couple times to download those mods, but since I didn't log in I don't consider that as an actual return).  However, I must admit I need help, because none of the IRL bots I've built are really good, and those in Ironforge are certainly no exceptions.

Nonetheless, here's one of the IRL LWs I've built, Reclaimed Iron:

124.6 kg, 1mm Aluminum, the rest should hopefully be visible.

Reclaimed Iron was based off of one of my older IRL designs.  Decently powerful weapon, but it can be really unstable due to how powerful the motors are in this mod.  Not sure if the axes are the best for this design, and not a fan of how I attached the rear wheel guards either.  Weak armor and iffy wedges as well (but the latter is to be expected because, well, it's RA2).

Constructive criticism very much appreciated.

great to have you back ounce. The robot looks good. I think the axes would fit, but i dont like the way they are attached to the disc.

Holy crap ! It's Ounce ! Holy crap !

Nice mutation you have here, losing that winter camouflage coat...

About the bot it looks good. No-frills but looks good.

I'm not a fan of the weapon setup either, i know it's to look good but i would just use a smaller disc and less extenders.

Welcome back! I'm a fan of your old robots, so it's nice to see you back.
I think it looks pretty cool. I actually like the two connected disk weapon setup, and also the wheelguards look nice.
Are the disks actually attached together,or is one attached to the weapon supports? If they're attached then I would separate them using the double axle motor (if possible) and stick with axes, otherwise I would replace the axes with beater bars and stick with the two connected disks look  you have now, for a cool drum.

The idea behind the weapon setup was to emulate a drum spinner with the weapon motor inside the drum, but I couldn't find the right components to completely enclose the weapon motor, so that's probably why it doesn't look good.

I'm not a fan of the weapon setup either, i know it's to look good but i would just use a smaller disc and less extenders.
I'm using the smallest of those discs at the moment.  I suppose I could swap it with a smaller diameter component like the small drum or one of the polygon plates, but I'm not sure how that would affect the look of it.

Are the disks actually attached together,or is one attached to the weapon supports? If they're attached then I would separate them using the double axle motor (if possible) and stick with axes, otherwise I would replace the axes with beater bars and stick with the two connected disks look  you have now, for a cool drum.

The second disc is actually attached to one of the weapon extenders.  I guess I could switch to beater bars, but I'm not sure where I'd get the weight from.  Less batteries maybe?

It's good to see you back ounce. I rather like the VS. I actually wonder how you've attached the discs drum setup that way with it surrounding the motor.

WB Ounce! Didn't expect you to come back, like ever. Like the current trend of the old AU guys coming back. VS looks really good. Like really. Probably one of the coolest lightweights ive seen in Ironforge yet.

Ounce, watch out! Look behind you, it's inf! Boo! AAAhhh!

But yeah bot looks cool even though it's small and small VS are poop. Consider using the NEW (by new I mean reskinned small battery packs) AND IMPROVED ballasts which now don't count for weight up to your first 4 uses.
How you make Alarm Clock Pizza is:
Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.
Step 2: Fold the sauce in 5 slices and put it in the dough.
Step 3: Paint the eggs with a pitcher of a clock showing what time you want to wake up and eat pizza for breakfast.
Step 4: Put the eggs in the dough.
Step 5: Make it flat into a round shape and draw the time you want on it.
Step 6: Put some old steel to prevent other peple from stealing it.
Step 7: Make it flat and cut into 60 slices 1 for each minute in 1 our.
Step 8: Put in the oven set the timer to 30048813.2884 seconds and put the temperature on 'Volcano' setting.
Step 9: If you think it is take to long, then get yor alarm clock and set it to now so that it will ring and you can take it out.
Step 10: Take it out uv the uvin wen it is redy and go to bed. In the morning eat pizza and also eat yor hands bi mistake.

Why would you want to use those when you can use the heavier batteries which have more total power and last longer?

I know right?  Now I might have to remake my showcase too.

Also use ballast.  You may use up to 4 without them being counted toward your weight limit.

Joy to the world, The Ounce is back!

I like the look of that bot. I'm guessing that you used the eFFe glitch to get the discs on the outside of the motor like that.

Axle loading and eFFe, but yes.

@123 and Mr. AS:  Is there a particular advantage to using the new ballasts?  Seems to me like it'll just make the robot heavier.

Sure, they make your robot heavier...
and decrease the likelihood of gyroing everywhere and generally improving stability. Since the first 4 don't count, it's worth using even just like 1 or 2.

Also good to see you, it's been too long :)

You use ballast as a counter weight against the strong motor, so you bot don't flail around.

And since ballast weight do not count toward your weight class, the only downside to using them is it slows down your bot.

The ballast .gmf is a reskinned version of the small battery pack. Go compare them in the botlab.

e: AKSHUALLY, it's probably the other way around.

Nice to see some new faces as well as familiar ones, and thanks everyone for the advice.

I like the LW, reminds me of 8Rec.
That's what I was going for, as it's just supposed to be a newer version of 8Rec recreated in Ironforge.  Just for kicks I also put the champion's trophy on the back, even though it's only a former champion in spirit.  :P

Here's what it looks like now:

Resized the chassis a little bit, gave it a cleaner extender setup, and added 2 ballasts.  The weight now is 124.7 kg without the ballasts.  It definitely performs better with the ballasts; it doesn't seem to mind the decrease in speed.
