Not just another "Lets make RA3!" topic
« on: May 01, 2011, 04:26:28 AM »
OR IS IT!?!?
Well, Kinda is :P

Ive been noticing alot of games lately that have been completely modded into totally different games & I just thought about it: Would it be posible to make a Robot game out of this?
You might say its too hard, But some people have done some very complex stuff with some games :P

We just need people that are capable of doing it for pure lvoe for Robot Combat :D
Im not talking about making our own game, But making our own (Huge) mod on some other stuff...

For example, Look at all the Source Mod thingies (Not saying to make it on the Source Engine, Just giving examples)
Heck, Even using Garry's mod we could create something RA-ish xP

Just sayin, It is possible, We just need to dedicate ourselevs & stop being so damn lazy (A bit of an irony coz Im saying it) :3

id Tech 4's source code is being released on September this year :P

Maybe IDK what Im talking about anyways... Give your toughts :D

*sigh*
Repeating it for the hundredth time. Unless someone writes a custom engine with a blend of rigid and soft body physics, we are just going to end up with RA2 with prettier graphics.

Source SDK. That is all.

The physics in Source are simple rigid-body physics (basically, a heavily hacked Havok engine that allows fast network synchronization). Plus, the public SDK is way not flexible enough.

We could make it a Garry's Mod mod to start!

What if we used two engines, one for rigid body and one for soft body? Where would the soft body come in?

That's the idea - a rigid body engine for coarse collision handling, and a soft body engine to simulate the internal structure of materials. I want to see metal bend, pieces break off, metal fly everwyhere.

We don't need ideas. Anyone can come up with ideas.

Code being written.
Code doesn't come out of thin air.
Needs ideas to generate it.

We don't need ideas.  We need good, new, feasible ideas, and programmers with enough incentive to go through with it.

The problem with suggestion is that people tend to overestimate their creativity, often times they are just repeating what everyone else already said and are not helping one bit.  These repetitive "fans ideas" become annoying and acts as a disincentive to the programmers.  Game modders/developers who claim to want their fan's suggestion are usually just afraid of losing fan base.  All they really wanted to know is rather people like/dislike the game.

No, you have no idea what you're talking about. Programming isn't just the implementation of an idea. It's a long, tiresome, non-rewarding, standalone process, especially when you need to write something as complex as a game engine (and it's what would be the best for a possible sequel). I would gladly do it, but I'm too busy with school at the moment. I do have 5 months of holidays afterwards, so there is a chance I'll start working on something. But I don't need ideas. I need research papers on physics engines, experienced programmers, time and luck.
