I have recently reinstalled RA2 on my laptop. It worked perfectly fine before, but my laptop needed to be reformatted so I lost all the data. I made backup copies of my Teams, AI and Robot Designs folders to paste back later though (hopefully that's not a problem).
I installed the 1.3 patch, then DSL 2.0 and 2.1, and then pasted my old Teams, AI and Robot Designs from my previous installation so I could restore all my old data. The game starts up fine and the battles start, but the arenas take a really long time to load and there are a few glitches when it finally does. Sometimes one of the robots just doesn't appear in the battle and is eliminated immediately. Sometimes robots fly around the arena for seemingly no reason. Sometimes the robots start the battle several feet in the air and it takes quite a while for them to drop down to the ground (if this glitch is present, the game usually crashes during the battle).
I never had any of these issues when I had it installed before. I noticed in the DSL readme files that it tells you to install the 1.2 patch. Is the 1.3 patch compatible too or do I need to find 1.2? Also, is it possible that pasting my old folders back in has messed up the game somehow?
Thanks for reading this. I appreciate any help you may be able to give me.

Christophee? I think I might remember you from Youtube, actually ^^

Just download the ready-to-go version from Sage's signature..... it'll make your life easier and won't cause any glitches you've mentioned before.

The nonexistent bots being immediately eliminated is an occurrence in the BattleBox arena. It happens when you try to play a Battle Royal, because there are only two proper start points, the red and blue squares. The other two are out in space somewhere, which is why they get eliminated straight away.
A robot starting high up normally happens if something has been built a distance underneath the chassis. The alternative of this is the robot starting through the floor, and dropping through until the chassis reaches it, then just sitting there.
Robots flying around the arena is what is known as a "havok bomb", caused by the instability of the physics engine. It happens when there are either a lot of flails on a robot, or when a motor has been knocked off. Sometimes the cause is unclear, but there's no way aroudn this, unfortunately.
Hopefully this helps. =)

The first glitch happens to me in the Robot Wars Arena, and only occasionally, so I don't think that is the cause. The second one also only happens occasionally, and doesn't occur every time I use a particular robot. For example, sometimes Dominator 2 starts in the correct position, but occasionally it will start really high up.
Anyway, can anyone confirm whether DSL 2 is compatible with the 1.3 patch or not, or whether I need the 1.2 patch? Also, would pasting the folders from my previous installation cause any problems? I want to try and pinpoint what is wrong.

Hey, I remember you from the RW Wiki. Welcome aboard.

I'm in the process of downloading it now. I'll report back when I find out how well it works.

I downloaded and applied the ready-to-go DSL folder on a clean install, and pasted my old folders back in, and the glitches are still there. So I applied the DSL folder again to overwrite my old folders and tried again, and the game works properly. So there is clearly something in my old folders which is messing up the game, but I don't know what. I'll try to keep my old Robot Designs and create all my old teams again, and hopefully that will work.

just download the one from sages sig and it is READY TO GO..... you dont have to paste it over a stock game ! just unzip and play

Standard RA2 glitches. You'll get used to them.

Hey Christophee. Yeah, the glitches just come with the game. You have to get used to them.
-
The thing is, I've had the game for several years, and I've never come across any of these glitches until I recently reinstalled. The game seems to be working fine now though. Thanks everyone for all your help.

Most of the glitches happen due to our building pushing the engine through it's limits.

i.e. we exploit the ingame engine with techniques like axle loading, stacking, snapper bursting etc
