Robot Arena for Mac?
« on: September 06, 2010, 02:44:30 PM »
Guys,

Is there any way I can get RA2 for Mac?  It's just that I'm essentially at a boarding school, and it would be nice if I could play it with my mates...

If you dual boot windows through bootcamp or an equivilant program you can have ra2 on a mac. Installing it on OSX is not possible as far as I know.

EDIT: Doesn't matter, found it on my mac.

Anyway, can someone please post the free download link for RA2 (from what I remember, Sage posted it, but I don't know)

You will need a copy of Windows XP or above to go along with your bootcamp. I'm still hoping somebody will figure out how to get RA2 to work with DarWINE.

I torrented my copy of Windows 7 to my Mac as a .ISO file, used and iso burner (PowerISO) and burnt it to a blank DVD, and booted it up on bootcamp. Then I downloaded a crack once I got it booted up and bypassed the need for a serial number.

And the link is still in my sig.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

Is there any way I can do that, Sage?

Because I'm at a boarding school (although I'm flexi boarding), I don't have much to do in my spare time (when I've finished prep), I was hoping to play it on my mac.

Would parallels desktop work?

I remember I tried doing the RA2 Demo on Parallels on my uncle's computer. I ended getting this message that said I had to remove something. Apparently all versions except 1 version get this message and it basically means your video game won't work. I believe you'll have to stick with Bootcamp if you want it to work.

Nope, from what I know RA2 only runs on a native windows hard drive. Looks like you need to buy a cheap laptop (or get your parents to send you one) or just have to tuff if out at boarding school...

BUMP

Sorry for the late reply here, but it is difficult finding the time to post nowadays.

Surely it's possible though? Aspyr have managed to do it to hundreds of games. If they can do it, why not us? It should be possible. We just need the game's script edited.

The cheapest, fastest, and easiest way that I think would suite your predicament is through a process called virtualization.

You are going to have to trick your mac into thinking that it's a pc, and you can do it though virtualization software.

I did a quick google search and found that something called VirtualBox can help with this. But I am not totally sure, being that I have a PC-dominated  lifestyle. You can also read this article for some help in getting it running as well as some similar programs.

RA2 doesn't even work with Wine, let alone DarWINE (which is a pretty sh**ty port). If anything, I'd try to make it work with CrossOver Games.

We just need the game's script edited.

RA2 handles cursor interaction in a weird way that I know Wine can't handle. CrossoOver Games / Cider may work with it though. If not, somebody would have to track down the bug in the Wine code and submit a patch.

*BUMP*

I'm not giving up on this. If someone can send me the py codes to the game, I'm sure there's a way. The game itself is pretty basic (But good basic), so it should be possible for the game to think that it's on a PC rather than on a Mac, even though your playing it on a mac, without having to do anything with Boot Camp.

Then again, we have got Serge...

Its like playing a Wii game on a PS3... the disc fits but it still doesnt work.

EDIT: a better analogy might be a Bluray disc in a DVD player.
