Title: Problem installing no CD patch
Post by: Robovore on September 14, 2010, 05:07:01 AM
Hi

I suspect this is more of a windows 7 related issue but here's my problem:

I downloaded and unzipped the no CD 1.0 patch into the robot arena folder as directed in the tutorials, and i can run the program that creates the patch, but every time i click to apply the patch it gives me a "cannot open file: access denied" windows message.

I'm using windows 7 home premium and the administrator user account but i think it might be something to do with the RA2 folder being located in the "program files" folder which seems to not allow anything to be changed once its installed.

Other problems i'm having with the stock RA2 are the options not saving (once again, perhaps this is something to do with the file location?), and the menu icons being scrambled.

Yes, I've had this problem before. Put your Robot Arena 2 folder some other than Program Files. Like My Documents(where I keep just about everything). It should then let you apply the patch. This should also fix up the scrambled menu icons.
Hope that helps

Thanks - would i need to re-install, or just move the the robot arena 2 folder into my documents?

another thing, i think i should point out that the download for this patch has some kind of virus - norton gets angry everytime i try to open it - "backdoor.graveyard" or something.

Backdoor trojans are lethal, get rid of it immediately. And where did you download the patch? Maybe it's something else that you've downloaded at the same time.

If all else fails, delete RA2 from your hard drive completely, and start over from the links in Sage's Sig. That's how I got my Stock back on track. Kept crashing whenever PREHISTORIC got involved, damn thing.

norton got rid of it - but it definitely came from the patch which i downloaded from this site. actually, norton just deleted the patch file - i wasn't downloading anything else at the time.

Unless you plan on playing online with somebody on 1.0 you don't want, or need it.
To answer your question assuming you play online 1.0 (I have an online 1.0 because there used to be several played it)
I think what your problem is that it installed to Program Files (x86) and back when the patch was made there was no such thing as Program Files (x86)
Click and drag by hand to your regular Program Files folder and it should work.
If you don't need 1.0 for any special reason, then you should patch to 1.3 and you will no longer need the CD to play.
1.0 is a very different game than 1.2 and 1.3....no flame thrower and such.

P.S. There is no trojan in the one on this site, THAT IS THE PATCH.....Norton is stupid, turn it of if you insist on using 1.0

Norton is stupid,

QFT :P

if all else fails... just grab one of our good old fashioned ready to run RA2 copies, just like mum used to make.  :gawe:
