I've been having trouble with bots made of a lot of extenders crashing in the middle of battles :( im not sure whats wrong it happens in both 2 player and AI

RA2 doesn't like a bunch of parts being ripped off bots so when you have extender bots the chances of crashing because pretty high, basically there is nothing you can do to help stop it from crashing aside from not using extenderbots.

As others have said its the nature of the beast unfortunately, extenderbots generally have more components that the already glitchy engine has to account for. Half the time I can have long fights with hundreds of bits spewn across the floor and the other half I get a crash after one small collision.

Yup! The game is glitchy by itself and crashes no matter if it has 1 extender or 10000 extenders.
(Funny but prolly irrelevant thing was that it crashed on my Dual core PC more than my current PC)
Another prolly not helpful tip is compability mode.
