Exhibition Crashes
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:25:08 PM »
Not sure if this is in the right place,

I was wondering what I did (have been modifying and adding/removing many features of RA2) that causes Exhibition matches to crash whenever I try and enter them. I use different bots of all different weights, but when I go to start the match, I get a black screen, then open up Task manager, and it shows that RA2 is not responding. Any ideas?

What have you been modifying/adding/removing?

Most everything, but I am thinking that it is something to do with the weight of bots, and somehow they aren't getting along. I have been able to get certain lightweights working, but not all. I have been modifying the main menu, exhibition game modes, parts in the workshop, music, text, teams, bots, parts, so most everything.

No, you can have a HW face a LW, so thats not the problem.

What about the exhibition game modes did you modify?

This might be contributing to the problem. Try placing them back in and see if it works.

Ok, I shall do that. Could it be some script referencing/tallying up the arenas, something that I missed? I will do that in the meantime.

Nope, I tried loading in clean RA files, also DSL's map files, and still got black screen/crash.

Did you delete parts from the workshop?

Yes, but I checked that the robots I am using do not use any of the parts that I deleted.

What parts did you delete?

I take it back, I just copied a few of the AI .bots into my Robot Designs folder, and I couldn't load a few of them. I must have deleted a few ones, hrm. Let me list you the parts that I do have. It was Sentinel, Red Storm that crashed it in the Bot Lab/Workshop

airtank

anchor
anglemotor
angler
axle
ballast
battery_slimpack
battery1
battery2
bracked_wedge

wheel_slim

ztek

Also, how do I go about fixing/removing the AI bots that use weapons, because I removed all weapons from the game, except hammers. Do I just delete them, or must I edit a config file or a teams.txt file? I am also heading out now, so I will reply back tomorrow. Thank you for all your help!

When all else fails... back up your bots and start over.

This game is a pain in the ass to troubleshoot when modifications go awry.

I always keep several copies of RA2 on my drive:

-Clean stock base
-DSL base
-Phil's massive combo pack
-a copy of RA2 to screw up and not care about in case I cant go back.

I see no car steering in there.  That's probably your problem.

You can get rid of AI bots that use weapons by deleting them or replacing them with other bots.  You will need to edit Bindings.py (if the replacement bot has a different name or weapon) and possibly Teams.txt (if you delete any teams) though.

I don't know why you're deleting weapons, but a better way to do it might be to just edit the .txt file and set hidden = 1.  That way, they won't appear in the bot lab, but you'll still be able to load bots that use them.
