Double Strength Aluminum?

So I tried equipping my bot with double strength aluminum by not going to the amour screen.  However, the armor I ended up with appears to crumple just as easily as regular aluminum.  What did I do wrong?

I have the 1.3 patch installed, I don't know if that affects anything

its stronger. don't believe your eyes. it depends on the fight, how the other bot hits you, and so on. dsa does not make your bot invincible.
