Hey, my game crashes quite regularly when i start or end a battle.
I'm using the downloaded version of the game from Sage's sig. DSL 2.1 I think it is.
Only alteration I have made is replacing the DSL AI bots with the original game's AI.
Using windows 7
error message is somethink like: Robot Arena 2 has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

It'll more than likely be the AI. Did you change the entire AI folder (including bindings, teams.txt etc)?
Or, it might be the components in the stock AI bots. But definately something AI-related.
-
I basically just dragged the AI folder from the original game to the DSL version.
Is it a more complicated procedure than that?
-
No, that sounds like the way you would do it. If you were to do it and it were to work. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but the components of the stock bots you're battling may not be in the DSL mod.
-
Do you reckon that could be it?
I bet that's not easy to sort out :|
any ideas how?
-
Stock bots work in DSL. Normally.
but you're fighting Stock AI with DSL bots ? *laughs*
-
Yeah, I just wanted to try out all the bots on the old AI before diving into the big DSL pond.
The crashing is preventing me from doing so though :/
-
Well first of all, welcome back! :) I remember you posting that massive post of RW reps.
Anyway:
1. Has this game worked before with the same AI?
If yes, then just stop playing for a while. It happens on my grandma's computer sometimes.
If no, then I would re-install the game.
-
Ha thank you very much!
Wish I still had those bots ha :(
I've just got a new laptop and fancied going back to play the game, i remember it used to crash when I used the disc on my old PC,
So i downloaded the copy in Sage's sig hoping things would be better, sadly not.
I must be doing something wrong surely, but I can#t think what :/
-
Must be the AI
-
Any suggested solutions? :)
-
not really a solution but,...
it happens to me sometimes (about once every two days actually)
i use windows 7 but i havent touched the ai at all so it probably isnt the ai
-
Just use the regular DSL AI.
-
I'd rather not just yet.
Would it be anything to do with the DSL teams having 6 bot slots and the stock teams only having 3 bot slots?
-
no
-
Ok.
Know of any possible solutions G.K. ?
-
Unfortunately not.
-
Just been running the original copy of the game from Sage's sig, turns out i'm having the same issues with that.
Could windows 7 be the problem?
-
It could be. RA2 was obviously not meant for Windows 7.
-
RA2 runs fine on my Windows 7 computer.
Offtopic: I didn't know Hal9000 ran windows.
-
I sometimes get problems like that on my Windows 7. Where do you have it installed? RA2 has the most problems when it is in "Program Files (x86)." Regardless of where you saved it, there are going to be problems. As previously mentioned by Somebody, RA2 was not made with Windows 7 in mind.

thats silly Infogames should have designed this low budget, unfinished product to suit computers 10 years in the future :P

Infogrames didn't design it, they just published it. You can blame Gabriel Entertainment for that (I think). :P
However on a more serious note, RA2 is programmed in a really odd way. It's one of the most volatile games I've ever played as far as crashing goes. It also takes control of your mouse and keyboard in a way different to that of other games (I'm not as tech savvy so I'm having a hard time explaining), not to mention a bunch of other little quirks.
@hal
It does work fine (or as well as it would anywhere else) on my Windows 7 machine, so I don't think the OS is a problem.
-
Not the OS then :)
I'm just messing around with the bots in the event mode thing, which is when it usually crashes.
Doesn't really seem to happen if I do it through exhibition.

Aha!
The events were always touchy. It crashes if you lose a wheel in battle, and it also crashes sometimes seemingly at random. Your game is working, if not fine, then at least normally. There's nothing to be done about it.
