two questions
« on: November 16, 2008, 09:00:05 PM »
1. Does anyone play online?

2. What component would I use to create a set of jaws made for clamping? I have the dsl package with all the good stuff.

1. Yes, but there are not people on constantly. You should set up battles on MSN or at this topic:
https://gametechmods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=759

2. I think you would use servo motors... I haven't played recently and cant recall the exact name. :P

i say just use a bunch of burst cylanders with spikes. 3-7 hits and the other bot's a goner.

I'm trying to recreate Diesector from battlebots since he wasn't made in RA2 dsl I guess. Trying to make a set of jaws to squeeze the opponenet rather than flip is difficult.

I haven't done it myself, but here's how I'd make Disector's claws

Use 3 of the Beetlebros' Chicken motors (The serov-typs, of course), and attatch an extender to each one using a side connection point.  To each one of those, attatch a Sir Killalot claw.

I used the dsl large servo. One at the top and two at the bottom. Its very beta, so right now, i just put an extender on each one. I added drive motors and made hammers too. I was gonna add maybe spikes or something to the jaws but I'm running out of room! lol. Even if i get it done mechanically, its not going to have very good armor. For the hammers and the two front drive motors i used the piglet motor. its so small but i don't have the wnough weight to spare. This is very tricky.

Clamps doesn't work well in RA2. Especially servos.

The only solution I know and used to make a clamp is the inverted side hammer...

That is, build a side hammer with a lot of power into it's weapons (like Street Sweeper), but invert the movement start and movement end positions. That is, the bursts' movement will start at the front of your bot and end at the sides of your bot.

When a bot charges you, fire the hammers. The two "pincers" will open, the enemy bot will go right between then, and the two pincers will retract and clamp the other bot.

EDIT: NO PIGLETS FOR DRIVE!

Also, just use 2WD with the most powerful motors and gripper wheels you can use with your weight rather than 4WD with weaker motors. DSL 4WD is like stock, it's best to use it when you REALLY want speed on heavyweights.

A MW can be lightning fast with NPC fast drive and techno destructo wheels, and an E-tek drive with techno destructo wheels makes for a really fast drive for a HW too.

Yeah, but my goal is to make the pincers clamp vertically rather than start in front and end at side or whatever. I might try and copy razer's weapon design. It has a tminus snap motor to use the top piercing weapon and just leave the bottom part alone and have it just stay in one place the whole time. Just have to see what happens.

Well then use the same technique, but on a classic (vertical) hammer.

I tried the Razer piercing arm weapon on a tminus snap motor and it doesn't take long to beat someone. I just don't have any way to stop them from crawling underneath me yet. I also found out you can't take off armor once you put it on. lol.

Actually, my trick is to always press 1mm armor first (something with the weight) and just move up thelist in the armor type until you get to the one you want.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

Yeah, but what happens when you decide to change something or find out something doesn't work to your fancy and want to modify it and you can't cause all your weight is armor lol.
